Help talk:Citation Style 2

This talk page is disused, and posts here are not likely to be noticed or acted upon. Most citation-template-related discussion is now centralized at Help talk:Citation Style 1, since the code that generates CS2 has been merged into CS1.

I feel the name of this help page is confusing. There were a group of templates known as Citation Style 2; the remaining templates can be found in Category:Citation Style 2 templates. I think it is confusing to reuse that name for this page, or to say that {{Citation}} is synonymous with Citation Style 2. Jc3s5h (talk) 12:37, 29 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

In preparation for the WikiCite event, currently taking place in Vienna, I have built a demonstrator template, {{Cite Q}}. Much work remains to be done, to deal with more complex use cases, and to resolve the issues listed there. Should we delete this help page? Template:Citation invokes CS1 and there are no more templates left in Category:Citation Style 2 templates, so now this help page is pretty confusing. Mvolz (talk) 07:27, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps delete the category. Yes, there is only one template that by default renders in cs2 style though all cs1 templates can be instructed to render as cs2 (|mode=cs2). It is pretty obvious that Help:CS2 is incomplete in that it doesn't actually say what cs2 style is.

One of the key features of the Citation template is that it figures out what kind of work is being cited by what parameters are present or absent (although there is a mode parameter to override the template's guess on this aspect). That and a number of differences in the defaults make it a distinct style.

I find it ironic that, outside of Wikipedia, periods as separators are usually used in parenthetical referencing while commas are usually used in footnote referencing, but Citation has ref=harv tuned on by default and CS1 doesn't. Jc3s5h (talk) 07:40, 22 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You are mistaken; |mode= changes styling: for |mode=cs1, element separators change from commas to periods, terminal punctuation is included, and |ref= is not automatically set to harv. |mode= plays no role in the template's guesswork.

In the {{citation}} template wikisource, it {{#invoke:}}s Module:Citation/CS1; there is no Module:Citation/CS2.

I am planning to draft a rewrite of this page. The main questions an editor would have like "What is CS2?" or "How do I get CS2 output in a citation/article?" aren't answered.
