Sexuality and Gender Identity Conversion Practices Act 2020
The Sexuality and Gender Identity Conversion Practices Act 2020 is an act of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly prohibiting conversion therapy. DevelopmentThe ACT Human Rights Commission was closely involved in the development of the legislation.[1] In 2018, Minister for Health and Wellbeing Meegan Fitzharris announced that the ACT Government would pass legislation to ban conversion therapy.[2] The legislation was delayed because of difficulties in legally defining conversion therapy.[3] ProvisionsThe legislation bans all practices aimed at changing a person's sexual or gender identity.[4] Offences under the act may be punished with a sentence of up to 12 months or a fine of up to A$24,000.[5] References
