Sri Krishna Medical College (SKMCH) is a medical institution located in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. It was established on 11 May 1970. SKMCH is affiliated with Bihar University of Health Sciences and offers courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. It's one of the best medical colleges.

The first batch of students was admitted in 1969-70, and classes began at the S.K.J. Law College building in Muzaffarpur. ^{[citation needed]}

On 1 October 1979, the college was taken over by the Bihar government.

In 2010, SKMCH became affiliated with Aryabhatta Knowledge University, after previously being part of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University & also accredited by the Medical Council of India^[1]

SKMCH Super Speciality Hospital, located within the SKMCH campus, was built at a cost of ₹150 crores to provide specialised medical facilities.^[2]

The Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (HBCHRC) in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, is a cancer care facility established by the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. The hospital is situated within the campus of Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) in Muzaffarpur.

The Government of Bihar allocated 15 acres of land for the project, which includes a 100-bedded hospital sanctioned by the DAE with a total project cost estimated at ₹136 crore. Additionally, a 50-bedded modular hospital was commissioned on 1 February 2021 using Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and donation funds. This modular facility is staffed by TMC doctors and offers a range of services including oncology outpatient care, chemotherapy day care, cancer surgery, preventive oncology, palliative care, and telemedicine.

As part of TMC’s nationwide cancer care initiative under the India\@75* program, HBCHRC Muzaffarpur launched a Certificate Course in Preventive Oncology. The inaugural batch of 32 nurses from SKMCH Muzaffarpur will conduct awareness and cancer screening programs across all 16 districts of Bihar, focusing on the early detection and prevention of oral, cervical, and breast cancers. A population-based cancer survey conducted by TMC had earlier indicated that oral cancer was the most prevalent in the state, followed by cervical and breast cancers among women.^[3]

A dedicated 100‑bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) was established at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), Muzaffarpur, Bihar, to combat recurring outbreaks of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) and Japanese Encephalitis among children. Inaugurated in June 2020 via video-conference by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the four‑storey, air‑conditioned facility cost approximately ₹72–88 crore and includes 10 triage beds, 90 ICU beds, and 2 isolation beds—each outfitted with pipeline oxygen, ventilators, and cardiac monitors. A 50‑bed dharamshala for patient families and a dedicated research center on the top floor complement the infrastructure.

Its construction followed earlier criticism that the former 14‑bed PICU operated more like a high‑dependency unit during the 2019 AES crisis, with insufficient staff, infrastructure, and equipment, prompting calls to expand capacity to 200 beds. Subsequent upgrades included installation of portable digital X‑ray, ultrasound, and advanced laboratory testing equipment to enhance pediatric critical care at the hospital.^[4]

SKMCH spans approximately 170 acres at Umanagar, about 2 km from Zero Mile along the Muzaffarpur–Sitamarhi Road. The move to the permanent campus was completed in January 1973, and by 1975 the site featured four boys’ hostels (totaling 400 beds), one girls’ hostel, the principal’s residence, an 18‑room guest house, a bank, a post office, and a main academic building measuring around 170,000 sq ft with two lecture theatres
