Hello; your bot has inappropriately tagged the article James Draper (settler). I can't tell you how offensive it is to work for hours and hours on an article, and then the first feedback you get is that your article has been tagged for deletion. The tag said that this is a living person. Wrong! This person died in 1697. The tag also says that the article is not referenced. Wrong again! The article has a valid reference, and is also equipped with inline references throughout. Please fix your bot to be less offensive to those who are really trying to make wikipedia a worthwhile read.Sarnold17 (talk) 13:58, 26 February 2012 (UTC)

DPL bot did not tag your article for deletion. That was done by User:Aaron Booth with this edit. My bot sent you a message because you had added a link pointing to weaver, and it was letting you know about it in case you would want to fix it. In Marmik (periodical), I would either link to wikt:organ, which calls it "an official magazine, newsletter, or similar publication of an organization", or even better, use something like "flagship publication" or "official publication", which would eliminate the confusion altogether (I certainly was not familiar with that definition of organ). BTW if you do serious article work, you may be interested in Anomie's Link Classifier, which color-codes wikilinks by type (redirect, up for deletion, disambig, etc.) so you can get important link information at a glance. --JaGa^talk 19:40, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi bot-owener, Tried to find the info in the FAQ and project page, but didn't really get an answer on my question. What triggers a visit from DPL bot. Is it after any edit to a page, only after an edit that actually changed the content (and was/is not reversed since last visit: eg if I edit page Luas by adding a single character and then would edit it again to remove that (so 2 edits, but no change in the content): is a visit from DPL bot triggered? (and if it is yes on this, what after a 'undo'/revert (just pure interest). And finally: is there a way to 'ask' DPL bot to go through all or part of the pages that I have contributed to in a specific period (regardless if I was the last one who made changes) and/or would it be possible to trigger DPL bot to check all pages I created/started (or alternatively: can I 'feed' a list of pages to be checked by DPL bot (eg by using a list produced by Toolserver (although the one I was looking for seems to be expired). (If you want replies out of this Talk page feel free to move it to my talk page and remove it from here.) Besides that: brilliant tool, really appreciated. This is a complicated answer, so please ask questions if I leave anything out. I keep a running tally of all disambiguation links in all articles. For instance, I can tell you that The Feynman Lectures on Physics has had a link pointing to the disambiguation page Magnetic resonance since February 15, 2011 (just past its first birthday!) Every day, I run database scripts that identify new links to disambiguation pages. Of those new disambiguation links, I have code the analyzes the edit history of each affected article and determines which person created the disambiguation link.

DPL bot uses this information in his once-daily run. This isn't the end of the story, though. DPL bot keeps a robotic eye on the last time he sent a message to a particular user; if it's been less than a week since the last message, he doesn't send yet another message (yet).

OK, so that's DPL bot in a very small and oversimplified nutshell. Regarding your question about whether DPL bot is triggered after any edit, the answer is no. DPL bot's information is based on the state of all articles when the database scripts are scheduled to run. So the article could be edited once or a hundred times before the bot makes any new decisions about sending messages.

About a list of pages for DPL bot to check, no, that isn't really something this bot could do. But User:Dispenser has some tricks in this vein; I think he has something that will tell you all the disambiguation links in pages in your watchlist. I don't know if he could do something in the "random list of articles" category or not. Do you have a list you could show me? I could at least look into whether there's a tool out there that could be of help.

There are two implementations for detecting disambiguation links. The fastest method uses JaGa's daily database tables (only for English Wikipedia) and checks that the link still exists (so refreshing works properly). The Topic points and Watchlist points tools use this method. They're meant for users to find pages that are interesting

Dablinks is the older 10-50x slower real-time method. It also works with 250+ languages and is the core component of Dab solver. Since it uses a generic library for input handling it has lots of options of how to feed pages into it. — Dispenser 23:44, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

I was notified about a link I added to lamotrigine. The link was to depression, which is a disambiguation page which includes links to Depression (mood), Mood disorder, Major depressive disorder, and Depression (differential diagnoses), and I was unsure of which the link should be for, so I added {{dn}} after the link. Could there be an exception to notifications where the editor added {{dn}}? There was a comma between the link and the template (depression,^{[disambiguation needed]}) which I assumed was the correct form, but I could be wrong. —danhash (talk) 14:21, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Actually, in this case, I'd suggest we keep the link as is as the disambiguation refers to 2 completely different things, neither of which are spelt Gagari or refer to the dance form. I concur; this bot solves a prevalent, tricky and time‐consuming problem. I especially like that JaGa seems to have implemented it carefully so as to avoid it being a disruptive pest. Great job.

JaGa, please do publish the source code under a Free Software license (preferably copyleft; such as the GPL); the detection code, alone, would be useful to other bot authors.

Personally; if I’m (add|chang)ing just a link or two, I’d make the effort of checking them, manually. However, when (add|chang)ing many links, checking them (all) takes longer than the actual editing. In short, I was pleasantly surprised to be notified that a link which I inserted was ambiguous, and needed to be refined. In particular, I appreciated the efficient and usable employment of talk‐pages, making use of the existing way in which users are notified of changes to their own talk‐page; instant(ly), noticeable but not disruptive or that distracting. Keeping (new) code minimal and using existing functions (for usable notification), instead of reinventing the wheel, is an efficient, elegant design. — Lee Carré (talk) 12:19, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi DPL bot, I've read the last message: the pages Tower Prep and Ben Jones are absolutely trues but for Tower Prep I've resolved the problem of disambiguation, and for Ben Jones' page the jobs producer and director, for him (Ben Jones) are TRUES, and none disambiguation. To finish, for Neon Knome page, the problem Brian Gibson is: if I leaved the TRUE VOICE of the name, compared the disambiguations, and the true voice (B.G. voice actor) in the disambigue voices THERE WAS NO. After that, browsing on internet looking for sources, I've found a site or forum (Adult Swim) when I discovered who that Brian Gibson's voice actor in the show IS ONE OF MEMBER OF LIGHTNING BOLT! I just did a check of the last month's worth of dab messages, and of the links covered by those messages, 58% have been fixed. I remember when I was going for bot approval that rate was closer to 10%. The bot sees all new dabs, but only sends messages when it's sure the change came from editing (as opposed to, for instance, vandal fighting or page moves). I have a separate request for the message added to user talk pages.

Firstly, please publish the text as a template, and have the bot insert a copy of the newest version of said template. This way, the text may be edited (and searched, archived, etc.) as needed, so that it remains relevant and appropriate. Perhaps as a sub-page of the bot’s user page. Documentation for the template should, of course, follow the conventions of other templates, and be a /doc sub-page of the template location (wherever that may be).

As for specifics (which I would do myself, if the previous request for a template is fulfilled); the typography of the text should be improved, using proper quotes (U+201C and U+201D) and an (horizontal) ellipsis (U+2026) (instead of 3× Full Stop (U+2E)). Compare the edited copy on my own talk page, and my edits of the FAQ, for reference.

If JaGa would like a more typographical version of h(is|er) signature, then I’d be willing to do that, too ☺.

Thanks. I have read the "notification" sent to me at User_talk:Mike_Schwartz#Disambiguation_link_notification_for_March_8 and my reply can be found there. (bottom line: It was a talk page, and I was talking about the fact that a certain dab page probably should have something added to it.)

I do have one other comment. This goes along with the idea from the discussion (see above somewhere, on this exact same "Talk:" page) about using a {{dn}} tag of some kind, to indicate that the person entering the link to a dab page was doing so knowingly (and intentionally). In my opinion, it would be a good idea, if there were some kind of {{I_know_what_I_am_doing}} tag, that would not affect the display on the screen (except when editing), but could be seen by this robot, and could be used to bypass [doing] the automatic "notification", in those cases where the editor clearly wished to indicate, that he/she was inserting a link to a dab page, but was doing so knowingly and intentionally. In my opinion, it would be fine, even if the tag for that were some dedicated tag, that was intended for the use of THIS ONE ROBOT, and was intended to be ignored by all other readers (human or robotic). Oops, one small correction. It wasn't on a "Talk:" page (does this robot treat those any different than pages for "articles"?) ...but it was mentioning an addition to a dab page which does not yet exist, and even when the "addition" to the dab does get made (maybe not by me!), there STILL might not be any article (about DEC CMS^{[disambiguation needed]}, that is) to link to, unless someone creates that article, and since this erstwhile bit of software is mostly history, I am not sure whether the topic is notable enough for its own article. (IMHO it is definitely notable enough for its own entry in the disambig page). (and in the "See also" section that I was originally expanding). Hi Mike. Instead of a "disambiguation needed" template, what would you think about simply creating a redlink like DEC CMS? Redlinks are great for spuring article creation, and you could add the redlink to the CMS disambiguation page. thanks for the notification. However, one doubt comes to mind: i know that the subject's nickname is "The Old Captain", but in all the sources i've read it's never speficied of what is he a captain. Therefore, should the wikilink not lead to the various definitions of "captain" (disambiguation), and people can still make an idea if/when they click the link? Suggestions please.

Thanks for your notification The article on William Brockie appertains to the parish/area of Yetholm which incorporates the two villages. The article you refer to as being disambiguation states "Yetholm can also refer to the parish that contained the villages of Kirk Yetholm and Town Yetholm in the east of the former county of Roxburghshire" which is what was intended - Help - Alanfromwakefield (talk) 13:10, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

It took me a little time to figure out what the DPL bot was getting at in this post. Instead of saying, "added a link pointing to Danny Young", it may have been much clearer to say
"1. In the 37th Annie Awards article, you appear to have added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Danny Young."
and the second message might have read,
"2. In the J. G. Quintel article, you appear to have added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Violinist."

Dear DPL bot, Information about Author’s Certificate (AC) on page “Glossary of patent legal concepts” was mistaken. Really AC is a form for protection of inventions, it is not protects inventors. AC is alternative document to patent, the other words AC is Soviet State patent, which in protecting of patent rights of the state and inventor gives priority to the state. It means that Soviet State nationalizes (expropriation) finance rights of inventors. Note in the conception of AC is given mistaken on page “Glossary of patent legal concepts” and moreover in the article “Integration of science and technology in CEMA, Issue 21 of Foreign economic reports. U.S. Dept. of Commerce, Bureau of the Census. 1983. p. 35 (footnote 84)” formulation of AC is not at all. There is, but it's usually only intended for hatnotes and some See also entries. The syntax involves using an Article title (disambiguation) redirect, and is mentioned in the FAQ. OK let's rephrase that - is there a way to mark it as "I've tried but I don't know which of these it means" on creating a link to any particular disambiguation page so that the bot doesn't fire off? Well, a huge replication lag on Toolserver (Toolserver's database contents was not in sync with Wikipedia's database by days; there should be no difference) has just cleared, so I'd guess DPL bot put out more than the normal number of messages while catching up. Considering the intentional dablinks, DPL bot ignores any link that conforms to WP:INTDABLINK. For instance, in a hatnote, you may see this:

For communities with a similar name, see [[Washington (disambiguation)]].

This would be ignored by the bot. It will also ignore the link if you pipe it:

There are many places in the U.S. named [[Washington (disambiguation)|Washington]].

That seems like a really weird error. If DAB solver makes any formatting changes it will usually include with DAB solver in the edit summary. (I don't run it so I can't tell you how to fix this). Ryan Vesey 13:10, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Sounds like Wikimedia Bug 32013, which causes Dab Solver edits to look like this if you are on IE version 8 or 9. If that's your version, there really isn't anything User:Dispenser (the tool's creator) or I can do; Wikimedia needs to fix their code. There has been not ONE occasion when I have used the automagic processes of this when I have been able to change the responses in accordance with the suggested versions AND have the system accept the changes first time. On EVERY occasion, it claims a loss of "session data". Something is wrong with this bot and how it offers up answers AND/OR deals with Wikipedia. I had the same issue when I started before lunch and came back later. All I had to do was close out and open back up and it was fine. JaGa, do you run the Dab solver? Could you put information on signing in on the main page? It took me a long time before I realized anyone could sign in. Goals: Avoid losing users fearful of creating another account/password (no phishing), fear of sharing data with a third party (privacy), or just don't want sign in hassles (it's optional). I probably did OK. Accompanying text must be written a certain ways to avoid Walls of text. For example: Setup: Open preferences, fill in the "Watchlist token" box, and save. does pretty good, but the IE XSS Filter message took a few iteration with writing and spacing before complaints decreased. Users are welcomed to write the documentation themselves, but few do it well.

Now, I was trying to attract anonymous users to disambiguation. To avoid the "can't save plz fix" (Save button disabled) messages, I enabled the save button for fresh (no cookies) users (anonymous users all share the same edit token: +\\). It's not obvious to me this bot should be telling experienced users something they almost certainly know. Not that it hurts, I guess, but reminding everyone who reverts a little vandalism or whatever that linking to the disambig pages isn't what they meant to do seems a little ... silly? Actually the bot tries to recognize vandal fighters and not message them. What do you use in your edit summary when you revert? things like "rvv", "revert", or "vandal" (if I remember correctly) will tell DPL bot to not send a message for that edit. --JaGa^talk 05:56, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

This is the actual diff. Someone wholesale reverted a referencing/improvement of an article back to an A7'd version (presumably because an IP had removed it), and I restored the new, referenced version (since declining the A7 was then appropriate - even though the A7 did apply to the version which was there). Ah, I found the problem. My code told DPL bot to ignore edit summaries containing "restore" so it barely missed skipping your edit. I've changed the pattern to "restor" so as to recognize "restoring" as well. Thanks for telling me about this! --JaGa^talk 16:27, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
