Hi,

your bot sent me a confusing message that I had added links to the above article which I had not done. I had simply restored the article which had, erraneously, been turned into a redirect page. I set that right but I did NOT add any links. Anyway, what's the point of your bot telling me that I added links? I'm not sure I need to receive that kind of information, and anyway, the way the words are minced in that message, I feel it sounds a bit patronizing at least to an experienced user. I think you may want to go over the messages you programmed your bot to send. --Krawunsel (talk) 11:35, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

I try to get the bot to avoid messaging users who are reverting vandalism, etc. based on the edit summary. If you had used "restore" or "revert" you wouldn't have received a message. So please accept my apology and feel free to ignore and remove the message. Also, you can always opt out of any future messages. Regarding the message itself, I recently changed it per Sue Gardner's suggestion. How would you change it? I'm definitely willing to scale it back a bit. --JaGa^talk 16:37, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

I find it unreasonable that someone should find it unreasonable to place a small piece of code on your talkpage not to receive the messages. Why wouldn't you want to receive the messages anyways? Then create a bot that can fix those instead of harassing content creators with automated outreach educational messages. Noone should receive unsolicited automated messages. If someone wants to comment on my work then I expect them to have the decency to do so personally. There is no reason for you to be slighted by a bot informing you that you made an error. A bot cannot fix DAB links, it doesn't know where they should lead. Who is lacking decency here? Nobody is commenting on the quality of your work. A bot is informing you of an error, nothing more. The fact of the matter is, a reader doesn't want to end up on a dab page, they want the link to take them to the correct destination. This bot improves the encyclopedia. If you don't want to receive the messages, it is incredibly easy to add {{bots|deny=DPL bot}} to your talk page. Ryan Vesey 14:27, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

And soon my talkpage will be a collection of bot deny links. Of course dab fixing is good, but let the bot post its messages to those editors who enjoy doing gnome work. whoever had the idea to do this: super great! I could fix them in a minute or so due to the tooltip coming up. I do 'sloppy' keywording: things that should be keywords which can be looked up I do just enclose in square brackets. If they come back red I remove the brackets, if not then I did in the past treat it as a valid lookup to assist the reader learning more, and not bother to actually follow them. Now, right, this time I did hit three disambiguation pages and the bot sent me a message (I first thought it came from someone else and thanked him for his input LOL). I used the fix it link in the talk message, the links were red, and clicking brought a great tool tip with selections, actually the ones that would fit were already lit up! Great software, great coding! Bots rock!

I corrected the disambiguation and piped to the correct state park. Didn't realize there were two State parks of the same name in the U.S. Should have checked before assuming. Thanks DPL bot ;) This proves that your bot is working and useful to Wikipedia to minimize or catch human error. -John

I had no idea this was around; I think it's a great idea cuz I wouldn't have known myself to check. I'm like anybody else, I stumbled into Wikipedia editing gradually, and I typically don't notice stuff unless it comes and hits me in the head.

I'm not even sure if the dis link was my fault; but I'm perfectly happy to fix it as it needed to be fixed.

Alternative idea: check this when someone edits a page: right when they're presented with the first page after clicking Edit. When I'm about to make changes anyway. It was an entry that was there before I'd started on the page, though I may have edited it since. I just didn't look to see if the link had been connected to the correct meaning. I'd rather the bot tell me "I noticed" than "We noticed" when it notices I mess up. It's more accurate and less creepy. Also, "though" should start the sentence, rather than interrupt it (especially without a comma). Not a big deal, just putting it out there.

I wouldn't read too far into the lack of response. I just don't think this page is watched that often. Probably why it starts with a "Contact Owner" link. Maybe because I said it wasn't a big deal. You've got a good point on the "appreciation" thing, though. The bot only notices disambig errors and treats them the same, whether they come from The Wikipedian of the Year or some vandal who may have meant Proton-enhanced nuclear induction spectroscopy instead. This robot really shouldn't be thanking anyone, without knowing what's what. Yes, it's polite, but insultingly so. Still not a big deal (to me), though. You've linked to a word or a phrase that could mean several different things. How is the bot supposed to know which one you meant? It tells you to fix it, because you have a human brain. And, as the person who linked the ambiguous word, you should know where you intend it to link better than anyone. If the bot doesn't slightly annoy you, you won't know you screwed up, and people clicking your Wikilink will go to the wrong place. Pretty helpful, I think. • The service provided by the bot are very valuable, but that notification language needs to be changed:

  is condescending and arrogant. The person receiving the DPL bot message is part of Wikipedia. Saying "Wikipedia appreciates" denies that membership. Also, the bot is not authorized to speak on behalf of all Wikipedia, yet appears to do so by claiming "Wikipedia appreciates". The whole "your", "we", and "you've" language further creates a divide by classifying the person receiving the DPL Bot message as not being part of "We" and not being part of "Wikipedia." Telling the editor "Such links are almost always unintended" implies that is something that editor does not know. Most editors do not intentionally link to DAB pages and are aware that such linking is almost always unintended. There's no reason for a bot to tell a human something they already know as an editor. That just puts the bot in a Mr. Know-it-all position and insults the intelligence of the person receiving the message.
  I was going to change the template text, but the location of the template -- Template:DPL-bot_notification? -- was not included in the message. Like other template messages, the location of the template should be included in the message. I suggest changing the bot text to something like:

The bot claimed I added a link to "Tonks" on the Geoffrey Rhoades article. I did no such thing. The only edits I made to the article added a db-g12 tag to it [3] and later removing it after the problem was resolved [4]. Please fix your bot. Your bot added a dab notice to the top of various meteorite articles, such as here. The problem links were in the included Template:Meteorites (and I've removed them from the tamplate). You need to fix that. Vsmith (talk) 00:26, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

The bot recently notified me about adding a link to the disambig page Tea Party to the article The Tea Party. This was intentional, as the link is inside a hatnote saying "for other uses...". That's kind of the point. JIP | Talk 18:06, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

Like the bot says, these links are almost always unintended. The bot can't analyze motives, it automatically sends a message to anyone who links to a disambig. In most cases, this is helpful. Is there any point making confusing notifications like this? Had it been posted about an edit that was made today, it might be of some use but since I haven't edited the article in four days the first thing I felt was confusion. Since DPL bot doesn't include a diff of the edit that the message concerns, it makes it hard to work out what the message is about. As it happens, I did add the link but it took me a while to find the diff of the edit, which was this, made six days ago, my 7th last edit on the article and 291 edits down my contribution history. No need to look through edit histories. The bot says the problem was with a link named Wilmington. Just follow the link to the page, find "Wilmington" (either by just looking or using your browser's Find function) and edit it to point where you want. I've fixed this one for you. The point was, I didn't know why I'd gotten the message so I had to look to find out why. I didn't think that DPL Bot had a 6 day backlog. I assumed that if I'd gotten the message today, it must have referred to an edit made today and that DPL Bot was confused. That actually does look like a correct notification. In this edit there was a change from [[wikt:homebrew|homebrew]] to just [[homebrew]]. Re the "Samland" link, yes, it should have been to "Sambia," which apparently is the current English version of the peninsula's name. I assume you are referring to your edit to the Eurasian Jay article (not Jay; precision is important in this discussion). You did create links to Britain and Ireland using the correct syntax. The problem, as you will see if you click on the link to Britain, is that the word "Britain" is ambiguous. Since you were talking about bird ranges in a geographical sense, and birds don't care about political boundaries, it seems very likely that you meant the island of Great Britain. Since we want readers who click on that link to get to the relevant article, you should change it to read [[Great Britain|Britain]]. This is called "piping"; it lets us link the reader to the "Great Britain" article while having only the word "Britain" appear as the text of the link inside the "Eurasian Jay" article. I am pleased and grateful for your advice as I get rather cross with people who dont know the difference between England, Britain, Great Britain, UK, British Isles. Ah that helps clarifying. I intended not editing anything related to wikilinks. In that sense the mere restore only shows up in the log but not in the edit history and I remembered vividly removing cleanly the prod tag. What I forgot is that i restored in two tranches, first the older version deleted as prod, removing the tag so that shouldn't trigger the bot. But then I restored the later stub, and that version came to sit between the restored one and mine with the bot later justly comparing my version to the one now preceding it in the history. First of all thanks for pointing out the disambiguation link fault. Second, a suggestion: the article that I am editing 'angle' has over 60 times the word 'turn' (the one which I left with a disambiguation link on the page) is used. It would be nice to have a way to know which word needs to be edited by the number word count. I mean how do I know if it was the first, 50th, or both times that 'turn' came up as an issue?
