Thanks for your comments on its talk page. My only response to date is (not a very good one) about the copyright. Otherwise I am going to let it rest for a while and see if any more sources crop up and hope other editors can improve it.

I like the article; hence my comments on Portal:Cheshire/Suggest. Go for GA; the article is at least as good as Halton Castle. I am not into textural criticism (which is why I welcome yours) but a couple of technical points. The link to Borough of Crewe & Nantwich: Nantwich Town Centre Walk seems to have died. And it's a pity that Churche's Mansion website is a 'For Sale' notice; I wonder what will happen to the website when the property is sold – will all those excellent photos disappear? Best wishes. I must say that really I agree with you about 20 informative-but-brief articles being better than 1 GA, but – go for the badge; and if it's Cheshire related, it's got to be good for the project/portal. Thanks for you thanks and I will try to do a better job next time. I withdrew the AFD because of the harassment. However one of my main objections, the linking of Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Sluggishly progressing schizophrenia to Drapetomania have been removed. Not sure if you've done this yet, but I'm sure you know how. While the update clock is at 10 hours, shouldn't we just update it and prevent more items tomorrow from being expired? I know many have used expired noms, and even if it's decided they shouldn't be used, it would be better to have them replaced in the template than the whole update being delayed. Generally it's been my feeling that one-day expired nominations can be included, as the supply of decent articles varies substantially from day to day, so that backlogs of usable items are common. Moreover, often problems are only noticed at the last minute, meaning that good-faith efforts to fix the articles result in an article that becomes usable only when technically expired. Which talk page? I could not find the discussion. We have lots of nominations with pictures waiting to go up and the current turn around only allows for 3 sets of noms per day, so I would prefer to keep rolling through them lest we have more and more drop out as expired.

Also note that the currently scheduled update is blocked by our school site, so whatever is on the next update could block schools from access to the main page if it's put up. --EncycloPetey 15:17, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your congrats for the GA achieved by Sir John Brunner, 1st Baronet. I was particularly lucky in that it was picked up within hours by User:Malleus Fatuarum who is not only English but is even local (from Greater Manchester). I have regarded him previously as a "Wikifriend" because he has made helpful suggestions for other Cheshire-linked articles. He made some reasonable comments in a very sympathetic manner and when these were dealt with, accepted it as a GA. It just shows that you cannot keep anything secret in Wikipedia! A lot of comments have been made about Churche's Mansion but I think they can all be dealt with. I read an article in the newspaper about manipulation of Wikipedia a few months ago. A few days ago, I saw a message board about someone banned from WP by a moderator just because he didn't like what was said (even though other message board contributors failed to see anything bad about the edit).

I just came across an article about an American presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton being one of them. The moderator there is bullying others and striking out comments. He claims socks but this is just an excuse for eliminating any discussion. As far as the comments that he objects to, they are nothing radical.

In fact, I just put a suggestion there and I wouldn't be surprised if he tried to eliminate me. If so, you should make the correction to the Prentice Position article. It has a major error. MD12752 04:19, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I hope you do. If you notice, decorative half-timbering has been redirected to timber framing. Grrr. I've had many such battles -- currently the editor of Caisson (Asian architecture) wants to merge with zaojing. In fact, he did do it. He just emptied out zaojing, put a redirect on it, and stuffed the contents into Caisson (Asian architecture). I did one of the few non vandal reverts I've ever done. I had to go to ANI just to get him to stop and use a merge at least (which he has not done yet). We are at a standoff now. Same problem with Lintel (architecture) which I wrote because post and lintel was focusing strictly on the structural, building method side and I wanted to highlight the ornamental use. But immediately I had to fight off the merge and redirect people. It still has {{merge}} on it so I have to keep my eyes wide open. I understand that it gets easier (and quicker) after doing it a few times. It is a bit galling for writers and nominators that we seldom get the published 4 updates a day (one every six hours) because admins find the task too burdensome or daunting. Perhaps something can be done to make it easier?

Maybe the best person to write up some new instructions is a person who has just gone up that particular learning curve, rather than one who has already reached the plateau? ( *hint* :) -- !! ?? 14:22, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have just had a quick look at your User Page and noticed you have been a virologist so thought you might be intersted in an aricle I wrote some time ago on a laboratory I trained in as laboratory technician as a teenager in Trinidad: Trinidad Regional Virus Laboratory. I have written a new article on the (to me) fascinating Chester family with four generations bearing the name Randle Holme, painters of memorial boards and hatchments, some of which still exist in Cheshire churches (and they are interesting in other ways too). I think there is a DYK somewhere in it but am struggling to come up with an interesting hook without having to give a lot of background information. Possibilities include:

1. ...that Randle Holme was the name carried in four successive generations of a family in Chester, Cheshire, England, and each of these was a deputy herald of the College of Arms?
2. ..that Randle Holme III of Chester, Cheshire, England painted memorial boards without permission from the College of Arms and that its senior officer, Sir William Dugdale, then travelled to the north of England and personally destroyed many of them?
3. ..that Randle Holme III of Chester, Cheshire, England wrote a work called The Academie of Armorie in 1688, much of which was included in a CD produced by the British Library in 2000?

Do you think any of these is suitable; or can you come up with something better? (Bet you can!) Peter.

Generally speaking, unsourced BLPs should be considered very carefully. Perhaps more so for academics. For many academics, allegations that they have side consulting jobs with paying for-profit clients are controversial or contentious - like who funds an academic's research becomes controversial - because one can never fully discount that the results or targets of the academic's research are in some way compromised by such affiliations. Thanks, Richard. As the user does not seem to have been vandalising recently I've just added a level 3 warning for the edit to Peak District. I've not done much in the way of blocks since I became an admin, but if s/he vandalises again, an indefinite block as a vandalism-only account might be in order, though it seems quite a low-level problem so far. Now that my project is fully up and running, I though you might want to consider the four main benefits of my method over the one that you seem to be supporting:

1. There is a set of orphaned articles for persons who do not have any featured lists of their own or persons that would like to take responsibility for more. Anyone can nominate such orphans. This benefits WP by getting people involved in list articles that might not have active editors to update them or defend them against vandalism. Please consider adopting one of our orphans.
2. Each list will be encouraged to respond to commentary and feedback during the candidacy period, which will hopefully improve the quality of the articles.
3. Articles without pictures will be encouraged to find them. E.g., List of Harry Potter films cast members had no image before its nominator added an image for this experiment. This type of thing, of course, improves the project.
4. Articles are encouraged to add relevant projects to their talk page. This alerts other project to articles that they would likely have an interest in and would be able to either improve or protect.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:LOTD) 17:48, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
