Though I replied you @ WT:MOSBIO, my real concern has been @ this move discussion. In this discussion one option offered is usage of word 'Prophet' since it is claimed that news RS support such use but I am not sure effect on neutrality of the article if users approve of such usage. So I need to make a better presentation, Please let me know if you are aware of any sources which can be studied and presented.

Thanks for requesting the KatBet one, which is now complete. Along the way I also found 12 instances of copying from external sites (mostly IMDb), so it's great that those have now been removed in addition to all of the cross-wiki attribution fixes. DanCherek (talk) 18:05, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

Look up red herring in Wiktionary, the free dictionary.

@Bruxton:, there's nothing wrong with the term red herring; it's a perfectly legitimate term in English. There's no reason not to use it, when something is a red herring. Which your comment was, because instead of disagreeing with the logic of the person you disagreed with at the Afd based on policies and guidelines, you instead brought up the misleading side-issue of canvassing, which in fact had not occurred, contrary to your assertions. So, I called them out as a "red herring". I realize you don't appreciate that, and don't agree with it, and I apologize if I hurt your feelings. However, your claim of canvassing was mistaken per the definition at WP:APPNOTE, which I linked for you at the Afd, and your claim that someone was calling for individual editors to join the conversation who agreed with them, was also mistaken. There's every reason in the world that another editor should point that out, in order to avoid leaving the incorrect and misleading statements go unanswered. Anyway, sorry to meet you in a contentious AfD. Red herring essentially means Fake problem designed to distract, which is not at all what removing the headings was. I was returning it to the norm. The Afd looks like a train wreck now. The AfD was the result of me patrolling and I came to what looked like a redundant fork. I am sorry to find myself on the opposite side of a good Wikipedian like yourself. I Hope we meet again and work together in the future. None of this is personal. Same here. Btw, I never complained about the removal of section headings; I disagreed with it, but I left it that way anyway. I agree that the Afd looks like a train wreck now, and I was hoping the headings might help (was even considering adding "arbitrary break", but decided against). I don't think we're on "opposite sides" because we're both clearly trying to improve the encyclopedia the best way we know how. If that sometimes means we end up disagreeing about this or that point, that never bothers me; I love the strong disagreement I get from the very best editors, like User:Tamzin at Talk:James Barry (surgeon); it makes me a better editor. I hope to learn from you, as well. Not to worry; didn't take it personally, and hope you didn't either! Thanks for your comments, and your understanding. I am willing to understand the issue further, so please excuse my ignorance. When I look at a word which seems inconsistent or potentially wrongly translated I look it up in a dictionary (or online source), I have no problem understanding the concept of a parkway because the dictionary tells me it is a street for driving. When I look up the word Generalmajor it tells me it is a major general, when I look up the word driveway it tells me it is a road to a garage. The point being, the dictionary makes a correct translation of the semantics and concept, however in case of the military rank it fails to correctly translate the equivalency of the rank. Wikimania is happening and hopefully you're enjoying the sessions. While it's fairly last minute, you're warmly invited to participate in the local Wikimania-themed meetup in the Wikimedia Foundation office this Friday (tomorrow!). @Girth Summit: yes, false noses! And, no shortcut, but if it seems useful, maybe I should spruce it up and move it somewhere more accessible. Meanwhile, you could just transclude it somewhere convenient for you. Part of its raison d'être was in order to generate the grid as you see it, which I actually did have a need for, and the other part was as an exercise in conditional column generation, which I hadn't tried before and is a little tricky (for me, at least). I was planning to do conditional rows as well, because otherwise the table could get really long (like a glossary) and I figured most people probably have their own set of favorite buzzwords they use and want to keep referring to, but I never got around to it. I assume you are talking about the approximately 200 articles which have invalid "comparable country" columns in demographic tables in the article? They are listed in this discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Countries. However, you must have mistyped the name of the article you are interested in, as it shows up as a red link above; i.e., there is no article for List of Indian states and union territories by area, so I can't help; sorry. I didn't destroy it, I removed it, with the rationale given in the edit summary at length, and then repeated immediately thereafter in the discussion at Talk. That's not "without any rationale whatsoever" as you claim, it's with a rationale that you don't like, and apparently, don't wish to discuss on the merits. Perhaps you'll change your mind about that. @Altanner1991: Wow, sixteen years and I finally get a vandalism template. You didn't mention *what* I did that was vandalism and needed to be reverted, but since our only interaction at Wikipedia ever, has been today at List of French monarchs, that must be what you mean. Howewever, there was no vandalism nor test edit at the article on my part, just a pretty standard removal of a WP:BOLD edit of yours, followed immediately by a discussion I raised at the Talk page to discuss your edit with you. Which was met with a pretty vehement response on your part, followed by another revert to reinstall your preferred version, accompanied by some extreme comments at the talk page. Do you really think templating a regular user with a vandalism warning or cussing them out at a Talk page is going to keep you in a position to do whatever you want at the article, guideline and policy be damned? @Altanner1991: I have no stake in whether the infobox stays or goes, and don't care much either way. As with everything, it should be up to consensus at the Talk page. I stated my reasons why I thought the infobox was poor and added nothing to the article, and removed it. That's the B. I stand by those reasons. When you reverted, I undid your revert, *once*—that's the R—because it looked like edit warring to me. You were the one who then doubled down and inserted it again. Instead of warring at the article, and sniping pointlessly here where nobody will see your comments, why don't you just go to the talk page, and make your best case there why you believe there should be an Infobox? Or, is it that you don't feel it's worth the effort to discuss anything, because you've got your way, now: the Infobox is back because you put it back, along with your edit summary, "You cannot possibly force away the infobox. Just ban me from Wikipedia!". What's with the hysterics? Nobody is "forcing away" anything, WP:BRD is normal procedure, and frankly, I don't care enough about the infobox; I was more concerned with finding a decent WP:LEADIMAGE for the article, rather than have a useless Infobox occupying pride of place. I've just seen this invitation/request of yours. Unfortunately I have no experience/knowledge of the kind you're looking for. But surely some people do. Yet nobody has responded in a month. My uneducated guess is that Wikipedia talk:Free English newspaper sources goes hardly noticed (it was only a week ago that I first noticed the page it accompanies). You reverted my attempt to fix a broken link to French Wikipedia in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89mile_Zola#Death I have not done a foreign language link in like ten years, but I had the link in that article working. Now, at least on my computer, the link appears in red, and when I hover over it, it says Page Does Not Exist. I don't believe that is how foreign language links are supposed to appear. Yes, if you click the "fr", maybe it will go to the French article. But I don't think the person's name (Louis Grégori) is supposed to appear as a broken link. I don't know how to fix it other than what I had done, which did work. This isn't really something I particularly care about or wish to learn, but maybe you would like to investigate how links to foreign language Wikipedia articles should appear. I really doubt they should appear as broken links. It is not intuitive that the reader should click an "fr" after the broken link. No need to respond to me. As I said, it's not a big deal to me. @SeminarianJohn: Thanks for your comment. Yes, they should totally be split. The fact that they haven't been split, and that there is a redirect at Moderate Republican that points to Rockefeller Republican has been the cause of untold wasted effort by dozens of editors at that article, for years. That redirect should point instead to Factions in the Republican Party (United States) § Moderate faction, and I've fixed it so it does, so hopefully that will stop some of the problems going forward.

However, unaccountably, there is *still* no "#Moderates" section (nor, #Variants, nor #Ideology, and so on) at the Republican Party (United States) article. It's as if all the myriad variations of the party had no importance to the article, which is ridiculous. It's a giant gap in that article. Contrast that, for example, with Democratic Party (United States), which contains these sections:

• § Ideology
  • § Centrists
  • § Conservatives
  • § Liberals
  • § Progressives

which seems perfectly reasonable to me. (They ought to add Dixiecrats, and Blue Dogs, too, imho, but maybe that's not different enough from Conservatives.) Where is the corresponding "#Ideology" section at the Republican Party (United States) article? Where are the subsections Moderates, Rockefeller, Conservatives, Liberals (yes! they existed!), and MAGA? Nowhere. That's *another* reason we have so many problems at the Rockefeller Republican article.

If you decide to create a "Moderate Republican" article, I will support you, but that's a lot of work. What I would advise instead, or at least as an intermediate step on the way to a full article, is to fix the Republican Party (United States) article by adding an #Ideology section, paralleling how it's done a the Dems (US) article, and add a few subsections there, including #Moderates. That will be much easier (though still not trivial), and then the redirect can be retargeted to the new "#Moderates" section there. Mathglot (talk) 00:18, 22 September 2022 (UTC)

I saw that you undid my 2 maps because they were unsourced, and i also saw that you talked to me personally in the message of the undid, I meant that Guinea-Bissau is included in the actual map of the French Colonial Empire's page, and that's a giant mistake, Guinea-Bissau was always controlled by Portugal, called Slave Coast at the time. Portugal controlled it since 1588 until 1974! Also, the "Additional Texts" were dates and some links that sends the reader to the extended page. Also, you can compare my map (Second French Empire(BEL).png) and you can see that my map isn't wrong, and Guinea-Bissau is not included. Thank you! No disruption is intended. In fact, cooperation is intended as I present several ideas that are not exactly what I think is perfect but addresses some of the concerns raised.

In fact, GoodDay is very stubborn (which is disruption) in that he/she insists that New Zealand has been a country under Queen Elizabeth during her entire reign therefore that justifies a separate section. Such odd criteria is not cited anywhere in any reliable source as important. In fact, several editors have said that NZ should not be given special treatment.

Perhaps in an attempt to beef up the NZ section so that this can be used as a reason, GoodDay repeatedly tries to enlarge the list of names. He/she even includes Cook Islands and Niue, which are not provinces or counties of NZ but are separate countries with their own embassies in other countries. Even other Wikipedia articles acknowledge this. True, there is a free association between Niue or Cook Islands and NZ but so does the Republic of the Marshall Islands has a free association with the USA but is not a part of the USA. This is actually insulting to Cook Islanders and Niue people but their population is small so few, if any, edit Wikipedia.

I realize that being precise and explaining all aspects of a problem may be thought of as disruption, but true disruption is the many times that others just change an edit with no talk page discussion.

Mathglot, I never thought about it this way before you wrote it... but "grokking" is clearly le mot juste for a linguistic experience that (I gather) we've both had. I'm not fluent in French, but within the limitations of my vocabulary, I grok French. I can think in simple French, doing my best to leave English out of my mental processing. Once I add any new word to my vocabulary, it's on its own – the word means what it means, in its own context. To translate it into an English near-equivalent would just be counterproductive.

@Lwarrenwiki: Regarding, "it's on its own – the word means what it means, in its own context", precisely; you've clearly grokked the situation. The same thing works with Celsius (if you're used to Fahrenheit), or vice versa; don't convert, just: how does it feel? room temp? a bit cozy? too warm? hot? blazing hot? That's what the numbers "mean"; they don't mean another number in some other system. Words are related to one's interpretation or feelings about experience in the world (real or imaginary), the best thing is not to limit them to a single lens, such as English, or French, but broaden them to encompass your experience as much as feasible, which is real, for which words are but an approximation, so no wonder they come out differently in different languages; that lens is never transparent, or even flat. I actually reread Stranger in a Strange Land just a few months ago. Think what you will about Heinlein's curmudgeonly positions on just about every issue... the man really captured something of substance in his fictional treatment of the acquisition of Martian language. It was exactly as you say, but taken to extremes to nail down those points. Once someone began to think in Martian, it changed how they experienced and understood the world, and gave them a new toolkit to manipulate the world. Literally, rather than metaphorically. When I was in the 6th grade of middle school, I wrote a paper analysing 25 (if I remember correctly) poems of Gerrit Kouwenaar. Word by word, sentence by sentence. Handwritten; I started too late, and didn't have time to use a typewriter (this was 1988). I expected to receive a low grade - but I received a "10," the highest mark. The teacher commented "Someone who can write such an analysis is allowed to hand it in handwritten. He was also my mentor, and at my graduation he referred to the following poem by Gerrit Kouwenaar:

@Joshua Jonathan: Thank you for this. I think I still see echoes of that 6th grade boy in the man. And thank you for the poem as well, and the introduction to Kouwenaar. I must admit that my only prior exposure to Dutch[-authored] poetry (if you can even call it that; more like doggerel) is from Gerard Nolst Trenité, who wrote a marvelous bit of rhyming verse in English called The Chaos with the wholly didactic purpose of aiding advanced learners of English as a second language, given how devilish it is to know the pronunciation of English words from the way they are written, which sometimes seems so arbitrary. Even native speakers get tripped up trying to pronounce the poem in its entirety; I think I had three or four errors myself. See how you do: The Chaos; make sure to read it aloud so you can hear yourself speak.

I'm asking you this because I suspect it may be something you know the answer to, but I don't: if you need to look it up, don't spend much time on it, I can try someplace more formal.

The specific problem is that a screen comes up on the talk page saying that the text is a cut and paste from the site of the local jurisdiction; this happens a lot, so it's possible, but the signature on this is very old and the article is not all that obscure (History of Maharashtra), so this may already have been remedied. There is no option to edit the pop-up, and it comes up so quickly that I can't seem to hit edit on the base talk page, and it's also modal (at least on Android). The uset page of the editor who signed it says he's retired or on an extended wikibreak or something. Haven't tried view source, but I doubt it's that simple.

What I want to do is, above all, see if there's a copyvio template on the talk page and if not then fix that.

I do know from previous adventures that the tool the copyvio team uses doesn't translate; I ran into it when I pasted some French I was translating into the en-wiki article, to translate it in that window, and saved it when my battery got low. It matched to the text of the municipality's website. It was in fact word for word, which their tool didn't pick up because English != French.

It had been sitting around for a long time at PNT, and who knows how long before that, but I was the last person to touch it, which I didn't take well, lol. But thus my preference to simply tag this myself and do the right thing here without interacting with people who felt I should be apologetic about all this, you see?

However it's either not adapted for mobile or for some other reason isn't displaying properly. There *is* a copyright notice however, but this is another of those wikitasks that I was doing more or less pro-bono so my interest in chasing this down is minimal; the TL;DR is that if the copyvio folks haven't looked at this I want to turn it over to them and do my wiki-zen stuff someplace where I am not toiling on stuff that will be deleted. My second comment above talks about the official website of the state of Maharashtra because that is where the text of the Wikipedia page History of Maharashtra supposedly came from. Come to think of it in the incident I described above there was one over the text of the article, to hide the copyvio, kinda silly considering how long it had been around, but anyway. I didn't get into the code, but apparently they put it in the wrong place? I have used a copyvio tag a few times since, and am pretty sure it is supposed to go on the talk page. Preach it. Copyvio is a legitimate problem and fixing that would be the proactive thing to do. I am sure there are a lot like that sitting around; I myself have found quite a few without specifically looking. I wanted to look at their tool at the time, but they have donated licenses for something proprietary, vs. something open source at GitHub or Sourceforge. @Elinruby: I think I understand what you are talking about, now. There is a banner which covers the whole article (or just a section of it, if only portions are violations of copyright) that is generated when you place the {{subst:copyvio|url=insert URL here}} template on the article page. You don't have to post them on a board; if you use the {{subst:copyvio}} template, that will start the ball rolling. You should have a good reason to place the template (such as Earwig results that imply a copy violation has happened) and ideally add a Talk page section summarizing your suspicions. Natural person in French law lists certain penalties for the punishment of slaves, including the amputation of an ear or jarret...it's currently sitting as a language term because I had to look it up. Apparently the word is mostly used by butchers and translates as "hock", or the inside of a thigh -- castration then? Hate to guess, and am considering just omitting it from the list, but thought I would run it by you in case you have run into this. I will take.a.shot at some of those dictionaries you showed. While I am asking things, a bit further along is a list of offenses, which includes murder or "réunion". Reunion? Not letting your family be separated maybe? I am currently combing through articles on French plantations. If you don't know and I don't find it, I guess I will default to omitting those items from those lists. Hoping for a lightbulb moment. Actually I *think* (but have not yet verified in an original text) that you must be looking at the wrong section, and that search perhaps getting defeated by 17th century spelling. OTOH this particular point of history is not all that central to this ontological discussion of whether slaves are human beings. But since we're discussing this as a translation here, I did some reading yesterday starting with the French version of the Code Noir article. It seems that "jarret" refers to hamstringing not castration, and was what (could have?) happened the third time a slave ran away. The ear appears to have been a thing. "Reunion" made it illegal for runaway slaves of different slaves to congregate; apparently there were settlements of them. I don't remember what I was reading atm, but I did get into sources. If as I suspect it's an open tab on another device, I'll cite the Code Noir article. Oh and the marriage thing is only semi-true and I'll work on the wording. It wasn't so much a mechanism for a slave to petition for marriage (which was the point that raised my eyebrows) as an admonishment to slaveholders that adultery was adultery even with a slave, and that marriage would prevent children from being born as slaves. We should follow English sources (even if the title remains in French in English sources). If there's no established English usage, I'd capitalize both, because that's typically what we do, even though it's not typically what they do. This books search in English books (you might have to set your Google preferences for English results only; note: not the same as having the Google interface in English only) shows very few bolded snippets, but those that are there, have both words capitalized, which implies that the article title as "Code Noir" is correct for English Wikipedia. It turns out that all that nonsense about oreille and jarret was added by fr:Erasoft24 (talk · contribs) in this edit in 2007, along with a lot of other unsourced claims in the same edit. Turns out that most of the article was written by Erasfot in 2006 and 2007; see their 174 edits to the article. I wouldn't rely on any of it, unless it's been independently verified. Nonetheless I agree with you that the index of suspicion is now much higher for this particular unsourced French article that unusual, given the part about marriage, which is misleading. Thinking that Erasoft might have been righting great wrongs, having just discovered, and been outraged by, the hypocrisy inherent in believing that slaves were people, yet furniture ... This definitely did not come up at the lycée that *I* attended. Usually I do the translation first, *then* source (since fr wiki article are almost all lightly sourced and reliant in primary sources). They tend to be correct, however, on the whole. Bur, taking a step back, the important thing for purposes of the history section of Natural person in French law is that there was, despite the declaration that all men are free, this law, rather than the particular details of the law's provisions. I found the full text of an essay last night by a French professor of colonial law that covers the big picture, but it isn't set up for mobile, so I will have to break out the laptop, but the knee and the cough are both getting better and I am no longer taking the codeine, so that's a good project for today. Also from a 10,000ft perspective, I note (but will not be including unless I see it in sources) that the Code Noir was felt to be an improvement in the lot of slaves, because they were allowed to be baptized. Well, I sort the list by date. It's how we delete CSD G13s, by deleting them at the actual minute they are due to expire. It's how we do things since SDZeroBot started creating its lists in September 2020. Before, there was just a database report at 1 am, listing hundreds of CSD G13s but now things are handled in a more orderly way. It's too bad but you can't sort the list by page creator or subject though. But they are listed in order based on the quality of draft so there is some intelligence the bot seems to exercise.

But to save the admins at WP:REFUND some time, I review the list the day before and delete any articles that are promotional. You'll see a lot of red links on the list. There are a lot of drafts we see that are self-promotional autobiographies, mostly from editors between the ages of 12-25 who think they are supposed to create a Wikipedia social media profile. By deleting them as CSD G11s, rather than CSD G13s, it lets the admins at REFUND know that it wasn't a draft of an article that could actually be moved into main space. Of course, if the editor ever returns and wants their draft back, I'd talk to them about it but they never seem to come back to edit after they first create the article. They do 1-5 edits, writing a page about themselves, and never come back. I wish they'd stick around and become real editors but they seem to lose interest pretty quickly. Liz ^{Read! I realized you may not have seen this, as I just replied to it on my own talk page, so I'm going to copy-paste what I typed up there so you see it here (with minor edits):

Prep time is definitely a hurdle that I think most people new to East Asian cuisine face, but that is 1) true to anyone who is new to a type of cuisine, and 2) relative to experience (i.e. if you know what the procedure is and have the ingredients on hand, prep time is dramatically reduced). Kimchi as a whole is a different beast because it requires a degree of fermentation (which, depending on who you ask, does or doesn't get included in prep time). The cabbage (or radish, or whatever vegetable you choose to use as a base) needs to be pickled at least overnight, then strained, then seasoned with the requisite spices and sauces (e.g. garlic, powdered red pepper, fish sauce, and so on). Even so, freshly-prepared kimchi takes some time (a week or more) to truly "ripen," so to speak, and reach the flavor that is familiar to most non-Koreans.

With regards to the variations of Chinese cuisine, particularly those relevant to Korean cuisine, I would direct you here, if you haven't been there already: Korean Chinese cuisine. Chinese restaurants in the United States that advertise as "Mandarin" cuisine (I have not seen any in the US outside of the Chicago area and one location, Charlie Kang's in East Lansing, but I imagine the LA, NYC, and Atlanta metro areas would have at least one such location) typically will also serve Korean Chinese cuisine, though the vast majority of Chinese restaurants in the US are of the Szechwan variety.

Korean cooked dishes, in my opinion, don't take more or less prep time than those dishes of other regions, again assuming one has the ingredients nearby. Bibimbap (비빔밥) only requires, at minimum, pressure-cooked rice, sesame seed oil, and a few varieties of "herbs" (나물; "herbs," at least the English terminology, is not actually adequate to describe the vegetation included in bibimbap). Some will also top that off with a sunny side-up egg and some other ingredients, but you get the idea - for most Koreans bibimbap is one of the simplest dishes to prepare. Kalbi (갈비, the ribs to which you refer) is really just beef (not pork) ribs that are cut in that way, and are typically grilled, and preparation is as varied as the number of people who grill it, though most people will only use salt (or seasoned salt) as preparation (I also douse it in lemon juice, usually freshly-squeezed). With regards to japchae (잡채), in my opinion the meat (should you choose to have meat in it) takes the longest to prepare, followed by the noodles, but after that it's really just stir-frying/sautéing to desired consistency.

Personally tteokguk (떡국), yookgaejang (육개장), kalbi, Korean-style roast beef, and naengmyeon (냉면) are probably my favorites; of those, kalbi and tteokguk are the easiest and least time-consuming to prepare (tteokguk's only prep time involves soaking the rice cake slices in some water prior to boiling, and maybe chopping up scallions/green onions prior to boiling - I'm assuming here that you have the broth ready from a kit or an instant broth pouch; kalbi literally only requires the ribs and a means to cook them, i.e. zero prep). In terms of ingredient substitution, many of the ingredients are not specific to Korea/East Asia, and those that are more prevalent there (e.g. sesame seed oil, certain types of noodles, fish sauce, and the like) generally lack substitutes and thus must be sourced from Korea directly or from an East Asian grocery in the US, which was more challenging outside of American metro areas when my parents and I first came to the US (i.e. the mid-1980s) but now is quite simple (as all of that stuff can be ordered online).
