WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Holiday Greetings

Peace is a state of balance and understanding in yourself and between others, where respect is gained by the acceptance of differences, tolerance persists, conflicts are resolved through dialog, people's rights are respected and their voices are heard, and everyone is at their highest point of serenity without social tension. Happy Holidays to you and yours. Always a pleasure to see your work. ―Buster7

Re: Adam Schiff edit

Hi Muboshgu,

Responding on your page to the message you sent me. You stated that "I noticed that you have reverted to restore your preferred version of Adam Schiff several times." I wanted to clarify that I only reverted my edit one time. Another user had undone my edit with a question, so I reverted it with an answer to the question.

I also noticed that after this exchange, you undid my edit again, with the comment "Posing for a photograph and a low quality source = WP:UNDUE." It would be helpful to me to understand why you consider a sentence about a meeting held in political office to be a a form of undue weight, as it is simply a reporting of fact, not a minority opinion. Thanks! Bridgess0 (talk) 03:19, 22 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I would pose the opposite question, how is taking a photograph with a world leader DUE? WP:ONUS is on you. The framing of Netanyahu and guilt-by-association is also a WP:POV issue. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:22, 22 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response. Perhaps the wording was misleading- the photograph was incidental. The heart of the issue was that Adam Schiff chose to conduct a meeting with an official who has a warrant out for his arrest by the International Criminal Court for "crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts." This is certainly significant to enough to mention in the appropriate section.
I would also point out that this section includes an entire paragraph about Schiff's response to another Congressperson's tweet. How is this more valid than his decision to meet with an official that the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for? Thanks! Bridgess0 (talk) 03:18, 23 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What makes that so significant? We go by WP:RS coverage and I have seen little about that meeting. It is therefore WP:UNDUE. If you want to make an argument for inclusion, it'd be better to do on the article's talk page where others are more likely to see it. – Muboshgu (talk) 15:32, 24 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies for the delay. It seems that we have a definitional dispute, as editors, of what constitutes significance, so I believe dispute resolution would be the best avenue forward. I argue that an elected official arranging meetings with an individual wanted as a criminal by the world's foremost criminal court is significant enough to merit inclusion in the appropriate section. You argue that it is not, because there isn't sufficient media coverage. I'm happy to reword the sentence for clarity and to bring in more citations. If this will not be sufficient for you, let's move forward. Please advise. Bridgess0 (talk) 02:25, 6 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

2014 United States Senate election in Virginia

Good morning. I see you deleted part of the 2014 United States Senate election in Virginia graphic box that including Robert Sarvis. I see you also sent me a notice regarding an edit war. May I ask why you didn't also send a comment to Shivertimbers433? After all, he was the one to start this edit war by deleting content on 24 July of this year. Also, why did you delete part of the graphic? Isn't it the goal of Wikipedia to provide information to the reader? If so, what purpose does it serve to remove truthful information. I don't know if you know, but Virginia is one of the most difficult states for minor party and independent candidates to get on the ballot and thus it is very rare for Virginia voters to have more than two choices. A person needs to collect 10,000 signatures from voters across the Commonwealth. Although I'm sure many Democratic and Republican operatives would like to hide truth that we sometimes have more than two choices on the ballot, it shouldn't be the policy of Wikipedia to share in this goal. Also, after reading the link on Wikipedia, there is no official policy for a 5% rule on this site, merely something apparently arbitrarily decided by some individuals. As it states, "It is not an encyclopedic article, nor one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines". — Preceding unsigned comment added by VirginiaPolitics (talkcontribs) 23:28, 27 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You VirginiaPolitics are the one engaged in edit warring so you got the warning. We have debated this issue over and over again for decades, and community consensus formed the WP:Five percent rule. Nothing that you say will change that. As Sarver received 6.52% of the vote in the 2013 Virginia gubernatorial election, he is included in that infobox, so you can't pretend this is some Democrat/Republican suppression effort. Let it go. I don't plan on responding any further about this unless I need to take you to WP:3RRNB. – Muboshgu (talk) 23:53, 27 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Nestor Cortes

Might be time to move Nestor Cortés to Nestor Cortes. All the sources I see don't have the accent. Yankees10 19:17, 3 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe. I will look into it. – Muboshgu (talk) 00:56, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, G15, has been enacted. It applies to pages generated by a large language model (LLM) without human review.
  • Following a request for comment, there is a new policy outlining the granting of permissions to view the IP addresses of temporary accounts. Temporary account deployment on the English Wikipedia is currently scheduled for September 2025, and editors can request access to the permission ahead of time. Admins are encouraged to keep an eye on the request page; there will likely be a flood of editors requesting the permission when they realize they can no longer see IP addresses.
