Just a quick reminder that it's been a bit over two weeks since I posed an as-yet-unanswered followup question on your NPPSCHOOL page. Once we wrap up original research, the next topic is speedy deletions. signed, Rosguilltalk22:54, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
@Baffle gab1978: Thanks for reminding me. I just had a quick question for you about the article (I could raise it elsewhere, but I do want your opinion.) A lot of the article's content is just lists; is that acceptable? None of the list contents are even linked. Thanks, Puddleglum2.004:58, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
Yes, I saw there's two or more large lists in there. They are unreferenced so you're well within policy to remove them without discussion. It's up to you but I'd certainly mark them with {{Unreferenced-section}} and put them between {{Div col}} / {{Div col end}} templates to reduce scrolling on large screens. It's fine not to worry about layout problems though. Cheers, Baffle☿gab06:30, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
March Madness 2020
G'day all, March Madness 2020 is about to get underway, and there is bling aplenty for those who want to get stuck into the backlog by way of tagging, assessing, updating, adding or improving resources and creating articles. If you haven't already signed up to participate, why not? The more the merrier! Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 08:19, 29 February 2020 (UTC) for the coord team
A barnstar for you!

User:Puddleglum2.0 Thank you very much for your kind and sympathetic gesture. I will certainly contact you if I have any questions :)
And so ends the first round of the competition. Everyone with a positive score moves on to Round 2, with 57 contestants qualifying. We have abolished the groups this year, so to qualify for Round 3 you will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two contestants.
Our top scorers in Round 1 were:
Epicgenius, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with a featured article, five good articles and an assortment of other submissions, specialising on buildings and locations in New York, for a total of 895 points.
Gog the Mild came next with 464 points, from a featured article, two good articles and a number of reviews, the main theme being naval warfare.
Raymie was in third place with 419 points, garnered from one good article and an impressive 34 DYKs on radio and TV stations in the United States.
Harrias came next at 414, with a featured article and three good articles, an English civil war battle specialist.
CaptainEek was in fifth place with 405 points, mostly garnered from bringing Cactus wren to featured article status.
The top ten contestants at the end of Round 1 all scored over 200 points; they also included L293D, Kingsif, Enwebb, Lee Vilenski and CAPTAIN MEDUSA. Seven of the top ten contestants in Round 1 are new to the WikiCup.
These contestants, like all the others, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. In Round 1 there were four featured articles, one featured list and two featured pictures, as well as around two hundred DYKs and twenty-seven ITNs. Between them, contestants completed 127 good article reviews, nearly a hundred more than the 43 good articles they claimed for, thus making a substantial dent in the review backlog. Contestants also claimed for 40 featured article / featured list reviews, and most even remembered to mention their WikiCup participation in their reviews (a requirement).
Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
There was an error in the WikiCup 2020 March newsletter; L293D should not have been included in the list of top ten scorers in Round 1 (they led the list last year), instead, Dunkleosteus77 should have been included, having garnered 334 points from five good articles on animals, living or extinct, and various reviews. Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.
Technical news
Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.
Thanks for taking initiative as a writer for The Signpost. No stress, have fun, and ping me if I can assist. Your first priority is to enjoy yourself. Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk)19:39, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2019. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2020, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.
Election results: There was little changeover in the roster of Guild Coordinators, with Miniapolis stepping down with distinction as a coordinator emeritus while Jonesey95 returned as lead coordinator. The next election is scheduled for June 2020 and all Wikipedians in good standing may participate.
January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work, completing 215 copy edits including 56 articles from the Requests page and 116 backlog articles from the target months of June to August 2019. At the conclusion of the drive there was a record low of 323 articles in the copy editing backlog. Of the 27 editors who signed up for the drive, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.
February Blitz: Of the 15 editors who signed up for this one-week blitz, 13 completed at least one copy edit. A total of 32 articles were copy edited, evenly split between the twin goals of requests and the oldest articles from the copy-editing backlog. Full results are here.
March Drive: Currently underway, this event is targeting requests and backlog articles from September to November 2019. As of 18 March, the backlog stands at a record low of 253 articles and is expected to drop further as the drive progresses. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Help set a new record and sign up now!
Progress report: As of 18 March, GOCE copyeditors have completed 161 requests in 2020 and there was a net reduction of 385 articles from the copy-editing backlog – a 60% decrease from the beginning of the year. Well done and thank you everyone!
Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.
Hi there, I'm HasteurBot. I just wanted to let you know that Draft:Gesa Credit Union, a page you created, has not been edited in 5 months. The Articles for Creation space is not an indefinite storage location for content that is not appropriate for articlespace.
If your submission is not edited soon, it could be nominated for deletion. If you would like to attempt to save it, you will need to improve it.
You may request Userfication of the content if it meets requirements.
If the deletion has already occured, instructions on how you may be able to retrieve it are available at WP:REFUND/G13.
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Audrey Assad, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page EP (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
Following the banning of an editor by the WMF last year, the Arbitration Committee resolved to hold a Arbcom RfC regarding on-wiki harassment. A draft RfC has been posted at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Anti-harassment RfC (Draft) and not open to comments from the community yet. Interested editors can comment on the RfC itself on its talk page.
Miscellaneous
The WMF has begun a pilot report of the pages most visited through various social media platforms to help with anti-vandalism and anti-disinformation efforts. The report is updated daily and will be available through the end of May.
Hi! Thanks for helping to reduce the copy-edit backlog by an astounding 75% in March! Here are a few notes on your copy edit of Salisbury-class frigate:
1961–2 → 1961–62, 1966-68 → 1966–1968, from 1967–70 → from 1967 to 1970 (MOS:DATERANGE)
2000-ton → 2,000-ton (MOS:DIGITS, for article consistency)
Neither ... or → Neither ... nor
The acronym RN was used for Royal Navy without explanation (MOS:ACRO).
There were a couple run-on sentences.
You can see my diff here. I wouldn't count any of these points against you, but try to catch this sort of thing if you're doing a featured-quality copy edit. Thanks again! – Reidgreg (talk) 14:04, 1 April 2020 (UTC)
Better a late welcome than no welcome at all, naturally. I'd send ya a beer back but I need to enjoy them cookies first.
In any event, keep up your good work, you've done a great deal in a short (or maybe long) time span yourself.... NomadicNom (talk) 22:30, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
Interestin'. I've been around Wikipedia and other wikis for maybe four years... always been kinda a casual Wikipedian though. Been taking to recent-changes sniping in the last couple months though. NomadicNom (talk) 22:50, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
Oh, I just realized you registered in 2018! I just saw you had only 400 or so (quality) edits so I assumed you were new; my apologies! =D I'm curious -- do you edit other language wikipedia, or wikis separate from the WMF? Thanks, --Puddleglum2.0(How's my driving?)22:55, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
I've spent a little time on the JA wiki, but two years of trying to learn that language doesn't seem to have gone very far yet... so I still don't know enough to make proper edits there just yet. Outside WMF.... mostly I've done Wikia editing, on the Fallout Wiki. How 'bout yourself? NomadicNom (talk) 22:58, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
English Wikipedia is my home =) I read the Italian Wikipedia sometimes, by an not confident enough in my grasp of the language to actually edit there. I also occasionally dabble in other wikis, for the video games I play, but I'm not active much outside en.wp. My main editing haunt currently is at the GOCE, which is a project that works in improving grammar, but I also occasionally do some vandal fighting, help new users at the teahouse, and write a monthly column for the Signpost. Anyways, happy editing, it's always good to take a quick break from editing and talk for a bit. =) --Puddleglum2.0(How's my driving?)23:14, 3 April 2020 (UTC)
Let me know if I can help with the interview in anyway
Puddle g,
I've been late in getting started this month and was just wondering if you're copacetic with the interview assignment. BTW, if you don't like to receive Wiki emails but want to send one there's a workaround. In your preferences just turn to email option on, send the email, then turn it off again. Smallbones(smalltalk)03:13, 6 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the tip Smallbones! Feel free to do whatever with the interview -- I don't feel any particular ownership of it. One thing I wanted your opinion on though -- I wasn't quite sure whether the questions are interesting enough, whether it's what the readers want to know... What do you think? For the WPR I'm planning an interview with WikiProject Redirects. Thanks as always, --Puddleglum2.0(How's my driving?)04:20, 6 April 2020 (UTC)
Hi Puddleglum; please be careful to avoid changing the meanings of texts when you copy-edit articles. I refer you to Armoured Division (India)], where you changed "redesignated" to "split". "Redesignated" means to give something a new designation—to rename something—not to divide it into multiple parts. I don't wish to nag you but I think it's an important point. That said, it's good to see your help and encouragement of new copy-editors on various talk pages, it's appreciated. :) Cheers, Baffle☿gab01:31, 16 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply; yes, my browser's spelling checker wants me to spell it "re-designate" along with some other bizarre suggestions (inc. "redesign-ate"!). If I'm unsure of a word's spelling or meaning, I find a web-search usually provides useful results. Anyway, I hope you're keeping well in these unusual times. Cheers, Baffle☿gab04:47, 16 April 2020 (UTC)
I don't think making such an aspersion was appropriate. Being firm about adhering to policy, especially when it involves accusations of racism, for example, is not "BITEy," —being new is not a license for such violations— it is a necessary part of an admin's role. El_C02:21, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
@El C: I apologize for the use of the word "extremely", and will strike it out soon. It was wrong to call an editor racist, but I do believe at least some allowance should be given to such a new editor, assuming it was, however wrong, in good faith and ignorance of policy. A warning and links to relevant policy in my opinion would have sufficed, but I could be completely off, I only skimmed the discussion. Again, I apologize, and did not intend for anything I wrote to be a knock against you or C.Fred, I realize you are doing the right thing, but in a way I personally would not follow. Cheers, --Puddleglum2.0(How's my driving?)02:42, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
Puddleglum2.0, apology accepted. But all allowances were, in fact, made. The user was not blocked, even after they tendentiously argued that saying a user is only somewhat motivated by racism was any better than saying they were motivated by racism outright. I think I was able to get my point across, which they seem to have now understood, thereby ending the exchange amicably. El_C02:49, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
@El C: thank you. I have refactored my comments according to this discussion, (I still am sorry that they had such a heated entry into Wikipedia, no matter who began it) and hope that we are on good terms now? Thank you for all your contributions. --Puddleglum2.0(How's my driving?)02:55, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
We're good, Puddleglum2.0. Thanks for the kind words and thank you for taking my concerns to heart. It is appreciated. All the best, El_C03:02, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
Help is needed
Hi Puddleglum, I hope you are doing well and staying safe! I find your Wiki signature very appealing, especially that little message at the end (How's my driving?). I wish I could create something similar with the Columbus' phrase (Following the light of the Sun, we left the Old World) in Latin. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get it right in the signature section of user preferences as it keeps telling me like html tag is wrong. However, when I type it manually in ordinary texts, it works perfectly. Will you kindly give me a hand with this, I would really appreciate that. Thank you in advance! --Visioncurve (talk) 07:51, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for your prompt response to my request. I highly appreciate that. I would love to have this one: Visioncurve (linking to "User:Visioncurve"), immediately followed by "Haec lux solis, relinquentes senex mundi" (linking to "User talk:Visioncurve"). Thank you very much!--Visioncurve (talk) 15:10, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
Sounds good Visioncurve! I have just one more question, do you want any colours in your signature, or do you want the talk page link to be above or below the userpage link like my "2.0"? Thanks, --Puddleglum2.0(How's my driving?)15:55, 17 April 2020 (UTC) also,do you want a different font?
Hi, Puddleglum. How are you? Regarding you last question, I would like the first part of my signature (Visioncurve) in purple and the rest (Columbus's phrase) in green. It would be nice having the talk page linked to Columbus's words. Thanks a lot and stay safe!) --Visioncurve (talk) 04:30, 20 April 2020 (UTC)
@Reidgreg: We were initially going to do a Community View piece, but now I think we are going to do a WPR, as most members and participants seem to think it would be a better fit, so it would be great if you could answer the questions at the WPR page. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks! --Puddleglum2.0(How's my driving?)14:10, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
It really doesn't serve much of a purpose -- I just like to collect signatures I guess. =D There are a lot of editors that have them, if an editor appreciates.something I did or something, they can put their sig there. Or just for fun. They aren't required, it's just a fun thing. --Puddleglum2.0(How's my driving?)17:39, 21 April 2020 (UTC)
