The VG Project Collaboration of the Week is a new effort to improve important video game articles of low quality. Every week, an article is random selected by AnomieBOT from the Stub-, Start-, and C-class categories that are rated either High- or Top-importance. Such topics can offer a reader a good deal of encyclopedic information about video games, but are often too underdeveloped or lacking the proper level of writing and sourcing to accomplish this.
All editors are welcome and encouraged to participate by offering their insights and suggestions. Having a pool of different editors, both old and new, will help maximize improvements to the articles as well as our editing skills.
History
Collaborative efforts have come and gone within the VG project several times before. The first such effort, the "Gaming collaboration of the week", began in October 2004 as a result of the several otherweekly collaborations popping up on Wikipedia. It proved to be quite successful at improving articles to meet Wikipedia's standard at the time, but the effort eventually saw less and less participation. A second effort, the "Improvement Drive", began in August 2005 with the intent of improving articles to FA-quality. However, few nominations and articles were selected. The decline in participation in the collaborations and peer reviews resulted in a third effort. It began in February 2006 as a workshop, but never got off the ground.
Numerous discussions have taken place on at WT:VG to jump start collaborations and improve the process to prevent its decline again. While previous collaborations selected any video game article, most editors felt focus should be on video game topics more encyclopedic in nature—topics that are also generally in poor shape because of lack of attention. A common problem mentioned was that previous nomination processes were lengthy and hindered participation. The current idea to automate the process was brought up by JohnnyMrNinja, which was further discussed to iron out the details.
Current collaboration
The current collaborative efforts began in mid-January 2009, and several articles have been improved by editors. The random choice is intended to minimize the selection process, which allows editors to focus on article improvement. Improvements include better organization of content, massaging and copy editing the prose, removing excess non-free images, and much more. The random choice is also meant to encourage participation from editors of varying interest and help prevent burnout. If the present selection is not to your liking, wait until next week. Editors are encouraged to add Template:Collab-gaming to their watchlist to see which article is selected. Recently selected articles are:
Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Risk logo.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. J Milburn (talk) 09:21, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I do realise some people add rationales after uploading the file itself; I do it myself sometimes. The file was just at the top when I loaded the new files list. J Milburn (talk) 09:25, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
beta release
I was shocked to see your edit of my post as the rules clearly state that verifiable statements refering to the design of the game are permitted. I should be very interested to have you point out a single sentence in my post that is not a verifiable statement of fact.
As to your comment about my opinion not being relevant, I cannot find a single statement of my opinion anywhere in the post. It seems that the only opinion that matters is yours. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikepytel (talk • contribs) 00:43, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

It always amazes me how much useful info never pops up on google search... I had to go trawling video game sites for that little gem (surprisingly, I now have good info for the UK and australia, but nothing for the US as of yet :P) --Der Wohltempierte Fuchs (talk)18:27, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
I was actually browsing a lot of top 10 lists, and "best of" forums... but related to FPSes. I must have accidentally saw someone who mentioned Shogun in an offtopic message or something. Sorry to disappoint. Randomran (talk) 01:42, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
Course on Starcraft
Hello,
I don't know why you deleted the reference to the course on starcraft but the site is reliable as it is the website for the course. A simple google search would reveal many articles from reputable on sources on the event.
Thanks for the response, I understand the rationale for your argument and appreciate that you were able to integrate the fact into the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.34.87.156 (talk) 19:01, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Ideally the FUR should be filled out before upload, although I will slow down -- there is no harm letting images lie for 5 minutes or so, I guess. — neuro(talk)(review)13:14, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for participating in the discussion about this template. I have now made a proposal, looking to establish consensus to change it, and I'd be grateful if you could express your approval or disapproval, in WT:WikiProject_Video_games#Proposal.
Yes, I did find some reliable sources regarding the units. Unfortunately, it seems that Best Buy is the only retailer still to have information regarding their special unit in their official site - but I was able to find official Empire: Total War F.A.Q from the game's official site which mentions the retail units. --Kurt Leyman (talk) 21:43, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Nintendo Task Force Request
Hi, I'm from the Nintendo Task Force. The leader, MuZemike, told me that you were the one who made the VG Barnstar ribbon. Congrats for that. But the point is, can you make a ribbion for the Task Force? Give a responce on the talk page. GamerPro64 (talk) 23:21, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
The WikiProject Video games Newsletter released its first issue a year ago. The newsletter is meant to help connect editors, keep them up-to-date with the activities of the VG project, and improve the knowledge of our members. We've compiled a list of questions to help gauge the effectiveness of the newsletter's first year.
Answers will be accepted for a three week period following the deliver of the March 2009 issue on Wednesday, April 1, 2009. Just to clarify, this is not an April Fools' Day gag, and we would really appreciate honest criticism. Information obtained from this poll is intend to alter the newsletter for the better. So don't feel you should hold back or give answers similar to everyone else.
The VG Barnstar is an award given to Wikipedians recognized for efforts and contributions to improve and develop video game related articles.
The VG Barnstar is one of many Wikipedia Barnstars designed to be given to editors that have helped further the overall quality of Wikipedia. It was created in February 2006 by Jacoplane—see past discussion for details—and has been given to numerous editors since. Sometimes editors with multiple Barnstars use an alternative way to display them: ribbons.
Barnstars are designed to be given by anyone, so don't be shy as everyone enjoys appreciation. If you have noticed or have been impressed with the work of an editor, feel free to let them know by placing {{subst:Barnstar VG|"message" ~~~~}} on their talk page. The template uses a parameter to include a message expressing the reasons behind the award.
S@bre, most video games, or other objects that are tied to a country of origin, by obligation, must be part of the projects per se. Countries with very special, well documented significance (i.e. South Korea with Starcraft, Scandinavian countries with Donald Duck) should also be attached. - I understand the US is a broad category, but this is out of obligation. WhisperToMe (talk) 12:57, 4 April 2009 (UTC)
You took more than a moment. I demand a refund.
Why not do it both ways? Since it's an article on the entire season, I would say starting off with general consensus about the game as a whole would be warranted, then you can drill down to positive/negative comments about individual eps. --Der Wohltempierte Fuchs (talk)23:20, 6 April 2009 (UTC)
RE: A UK police power isn't exactly relevant, nor is the idea of private property
Well, if you ever played the game, this is EXACTLY what they do. Stopping citizens on the street and raiding the blocks of flats where the poor folks live. But I won't argue about such a trifle.
Otherwise, well done with that electroshock baton, I didn't know that it redirects to electroshock weapons, and it is batons which they are using, so I thought it would be more accurate than just weapons. —Preceding unsigned comment added by NeonPuffin (talk • contribs) 20:49, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
Cheers for taking the time to review and copyedit Medieval: Total War, I'll try to find those sources and get a good screenshot whenever my computer that can run the game is working again. On another note, could you delete File:MedievalTotalWarItalianCampaign.jpg, no longer has a use here. Cheers QueenCake (talk) 21:20, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
Due to an apparent lack of interest, the WPVG Newsletter will be switching from a monthly publication schedule to a quarterly one. The next issue be delivered on July 1, 2009, and will pertain to the second quarter of the calendar year. If you have any comments regarding this, or suggestions to improve the newsletter, please post at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Video games/Newsletter.

Shock*, not a video game? But of course, limey pride! :) I'm not really sure what LexisNexis will give you if it's an academic subject... I think you'd be better off on scholarly databases such as ProjectMuse or JSTOR. Either way I'll run through my library's stuff (assuming the proxy doesn't keep crashing my comp) and see what I can scrounge. --Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs (talk)02:21, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
The article Sam & Max Save the World you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . It hasn't failed because it's basically a good article, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:Sam & Max Save the World for things needed to be addressed. MuZemike19:30, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

It's pretty small beer, but I think you're bordering on WP:OR here by interpreting hard facts from jokes. A spate of comedy blog posts about firing everyone doesn't tell us anything concrete about whether the leak was an intentional marketing ploy, or a genuine accident that they're making light of. --McGeddon (talk) 12:33, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Request for an opinion
Good day, I've seen your quality work with the Team Fortress 2 article and thought you might be able to provide an opinion on a topic of discussion for another game. Rather than rehash the topic, here it is. Thank you for your time. DP76764 (Talk) 06:13, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
What is the feasibility of merging in content from other wiki's that have GFDL licence? I ask this in the context of the Diablo series... which seems to be far inferior to it's wikia counterpart http://diablo.wikia.com/wiki/Diablo_Wiki . Now it probably would be possible to simply draw from their sources and create content simmilar, although concidering how well written it already is, the question remains 'why fix something that isn't broken'?--Tyraz (talk) 23:14, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Starcraft locations
Hello! I am little dismayed that our exchange there got heated all of a sudden, so anyway, what about Sephiroth's suggestion of some kind "universe of Starcraft" article. I am generally open to compromises and would be willing to meet a halfway for a merge and redirect there. I truly believe that the items have potential, hence why I am opposed to redlinking, but if we combine the various Starcraft fictional element articles into a univser one in which we at least allow for edit history intact and redirects, I would be willing to 1) compromise there and 2) see if anything turns up sourcewise in the various game magazines for which I have subscriptions. Starcraft 2
Hi, I noticed the changes I made where undone on the SC2 page. I'm not quite sure how to go about citing this controversy as the majority of the discussion is taking place (so far) in places like the Blizzard forums, Digg comments, etc. There are already many articles written on the subject (cited an IGN article?), however, because the interview was posted on the 28th the controversy is still building. Google: Starcraft 2 LAN and you can see it's heating up quickly. Also, if there's anything bias feel free to clean it up to be more balanced (did my best) —Preceding unsigned comment added by JMJimmy (talk • contribs) 00:16, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
How many blog/news posts are required before it becomes "controversy"? While a fan I am, +"no lan" +"starcraft 2" Google search brings up 10,700 results in 2 days since the news was announced. And yes, I know not everyone of those 10k will be relevant, however, going through them there's a statistically significant number of pages, including a petition with ~3500 signatures (petitiononline dot com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?LANSC2) that bemoan the lack of LAN support. I would also agree with you that fans get upset over the slightest changes, in this particular case the history of SC1 LAN parties makes this issue far more significant than a typical "here and gone" fan issue. I agree that it should be a neutral point of view, and that quality citations are needed as it is a controversial subject. If Ars/IGN are not significant enough sources, what would be? On a side note: your comments indicated citing wikipedia - no wikipedia citations where made so it's rather confusing. I did have trouble with the Ars Technia citation which wouldn't display the title for some reason. —Preceding unsigned comment added by JMJimmy (talk • contribs) 16:07, 30 June 2009 (UTC)

Starcraft (series) #Novelizations
Hi, S@bre,
I can't find this Manual of Style.... Can you show me where it is? (I swear I'm not being sarcastic... I might be slightly lazy, yes)
Doesn't the bold make it easier to read? to tell how many books there are?
I actually read the novels myself, and being interested I like to follow the order, and in reading that passage, I found it a bit difficult to tell how many novels there are and in what order they go...
Just some thoughts

Hi there, I'm looking to add a list of mods to the Doom 3 wiki page and am new to how wikipedia works (there seems to be a lot to take in at once!).
The list of mods are the largest mods for the project as can be seen by the number of total downloads on www.d3files.com and the number of followers/site vistors of the listed mods on the moddb.com website. How would I cite this to have the mods listed?
I listed the mods in the same format as on the Quake 2 page, can you please explain the difference between having mods for Quake 2 listed as opposed to Doom 3 mods?
I was looking to expand on the list to include distinction between released and unreleased mods (as Hexen:EOC is not released yet)...
I talked to some people on the IRC help channel and they gave me some advice on how to place it correctly so will do what was suggested shortly Davecat2007 (talk) 23:23, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

And just so you know that I'm not out to "get" the article:
Could you tell me or link to the reasoning for “prose is the preferred approach”?
Would you find reasonable a rewrite which kept the prose paragraphs but gave them similar structure, e.g. starting with the mode name in the first few words? What if the names were emphasized?
A long while back I put Judith Mossman up for AfD and you'd mentioned there were plans to merge the non-notable characters into a list. If you can point out which need to be merged I can set up a rough list from what's there if you want.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 18:57, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
Alright, through some rough merging pulled this off, there's one holdup though: one of the articles got nominated for AfD just prior to starting this up. I asked for a speedy close to turn it into a redirect, but so far it's fallen on deaf ears.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 19:11, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

StarCraft II move
I started rewording the StarCraft II page in my Sandbox. Because we are now talking about one specific game rather than a trilogy, we need to make some minor revisions to the introduction. Any more suggestions would be appreciated. Oldag07 (talk) 01:40, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
She's actually looking pretty good, I'm not too much worried about further reception at this point per se because there has been some notability shown for the subject now and the development information provides a nice helping of real-world content. There looks like there's enough bits of reception out there too in what I've read and cited in Elaine's article that LeChuck and Guybursh could be fixed as well, but one thing at a time.

I noticed that all the sclegacy.com transcript links (such as [2] and [3]) seem to be dead; they are widely used in articles like Species of StarCraft, the character lists, etc. Do you know of any plans to replace them in a systematic way (such as applying for a bot to look up urls from web.archive.org, or do something like that the geocities bot has been doing), or will it have to be done manually? rʨanaɢtalk/contribs21:11, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
Good Point
Hey S@bre,
Just wanted to say good point on the StarCraft characters page at the Characters of StarCraft page. Thanks for editing it properly. I was giving my first shot at editing, and I know you made this edit over a year ago, but just wanted to say thanks.
Hey there. :) I keep it short because there's a lot of games to do, and I don't want to spend the next year on this little project. ;) I totally agree that "there's no point merely having the information that its been reviewed without any of the points made by the review", although I add that info anyway for two reasons: one, so someone can ask me for more, and two so that someone who has access to the review can DIY. :) I'll leave it up to you as to what you want to add, so check your e-mail! It's a big-un, so let me know if you got it. BOZ (talk) 14:20, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
Sorry about that - I was running late and didn't have the time to do more than copy/paste from the PDF. If you need, I could take a little time to go over it again and fix it up to make it easier to use? BOZ (talk) 18:18, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
Well, it's an OCR'ed PDF of the whole magazine, so it would be pretty large to send through e-mail. I'll just try formatting the text to make it easier to read, and you let me know if that helps; if not, we'll try something else. I'll tell you what; the first part of the review and the end of it was also a huge garbled mess, which sometimes happens when doing a copy/paste with the program. I've straightened it all out, so let me know what you think. BOZ (talk) 18:45, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
