ノーサンプトン侯爵 （英語 : Marquess of Northampton ）は、イギリス の侯爵 位。
過去に2度創設されており、現存する2期目のノーサンプトン侯爵位は、1572年 創設のコンプトン男爵 （英語版 ） 1618年 創設のノーサンプトン伯爵 を前身とし、1812年 に第9代ノーサンプトン伯爵チャールズ・コンプトン が連合王国貴族 として叙せられたのに始まる。2015年 現在の爵位保有者は第7代ノーサンプトン侯爵スペンサー・コンプトン である。
初代エセックス伯爵 ウィリアム・パー (1513–1571) が、1547年 2月16日 にイングランド貴族 としてノーサンプトン侯爵に叙せられたのが最初の創設である。しかし子供がなかったので彼一代で廃絶している[ 1]
アシュビー城 （英語版 ） 1536年 から1567年 にかけて庶民院 議員を務めたヘンリー・コンプトン （英語版 ） (1538頃-1589) は、1572年 5月8日 の議会招集令状 （英語版 ） コンプトン男爵 (Baron Compton) に叙せられた[ 2] [ 3]
ついでその息子である第2代コンプトン男爵ウィリアム・コンプトン （英語版 ） (-1630) は、1618年 8月2日 の勅許状 によるイングランド貴族爵位ノーサンプトン伯爵 (Earl of Northampton) に叙せられた[ 4]
3代ノーサンプトン伯ジェイムズ・コンプトン (1622–1681) の第3子スペンサー・コンプトン (1674頃–1743) は、ホイッグ党 の政治家として活躍し、1730年に本家と別にグレートブリテン 爵位ウィルミントン伯爵 に叙せられ、1742年 から1743年 にかけて首相 を務めたことで知られる。しかし子供がなかったため、ウィルミントン伯爵位は彼の死とともに消滅している[ 5]
議会招集令状によって創設されたコンプトン男爵位は女系継承が可能であるため、5代ノーサンプトン伯ジェイムズ・コンプトン (1687–1754) が1754年に娘のみを残して死去した際に女系継承が行われた[ 2] ジョージ・コンプトン (1692–1758) に継承されたので分離した[ 4]
9代ノーサンプトン伯チャールズ・コンプトン (1760–1828) の代の1812年 9月7日 にはサセックス州におけるウィルミントンのウィルミントン男爵 （英語版 ） (Baron Wilmington, of Wilmington in the County of Sussex) 、ウォリック州におけるコンプトンのコンプトン伯爵 (Earl Compton, of Compton in the County of Warwick) 、そしてノーサンプトン侯爵 (Marquess of Northampton) に叙せられた[ 6] [ 7]
2015年 現在の当主は第7代ノーサンプトン侯爵スペンサー・コンプトン (1946-) である[ 6] [ 8]
