ライオネル・ハンプトン（Lionel Hampton、本名：ライオネル・レオ・ハンプトン、1908年 4月20日 - 2002年 8月31日）は、アメリカのジャズ・ミュージシャン。ジャズ・ヴィブラフォンの第一人者として知られる。

略歴

アラバマ州バーミングハム^[1]^[2]^[3]またはケンタッキー州ルイビル生まれ^[4]^[5]^[6]。ドラマーとしてミュージシャンとしてのキャリアを始めた。ヴィブラフォンとの出会いは1930年にルイ・アームストロングのレコーディングに参加したとき。スタジオに置いてあったヴィブラフォンを弾いてみるようにアームストロングから言われたのがきっかけという。

1936年、ハンプトンはヴィブラフォン奏者としてベニー・グッドマンのバンドに参加する。これはジャズ楽器としてのヴィブラフォンの存在を広く知らしめただけでなく、人種の壁が厚かった時代に白人の人気バンドに黒人のミュージシャンが参加したという点でも画期的な出来事であった。

その後もハンプトンは自身のリーダーバンドを率いて精力的に活動し、ジャズ・ヴィブラフォンの第一人者としての地位を確立。バンドからは多数の有名ジャズ・ミュージシャンを輩出した。またボーカリストとしても明るいエンターテイナーぶりを発揮して人気を博した。1995年に心臓発作で倒れライブ活動を引退。2002年8月、94歳で逝去。
