ក្រុមជំនុំ (អង់គ្លេស: Church) ជាមនុស្សទាំងឡាយណាដែលត្រូេវបានត្រាស់ហៅដោយព្រះគ្រីស្ទ និងត្រូេវបានត្រាស់ហៅឲ្យមកឯព្រះគ្រីស្ទ ដើម្បីឲ្យបានរួមប្រកបជាមួយនឹងសេចក្ដីសង្គ្រោះរបស់ព្រះអង្គ។ នៅក្នុងគំនិតរបស់ពួកយូដា ក្រុមជំនុំគឺជាសហធម្មាចារី ឬក្រុមមនុស្សដែលប្រមូលផ្ដុំគ្នាដើម្បីថ្វាយបង្គំ។

នៅក្នុងព្រះគម្ពីរសម្ពន្ធមេត្រីថ្មី ពាក្យ ἐκκλησία ត្រូវបានប្រើសម្រាប់សហគមក្នុងតំបន់ ព្រមទាំងសំដៅទៅលើពួកអ្នកជឿទាំងអស់។[៤]

ដើមកំណើតក្រុមជំនុំ

ពាក្យក្រិក ekklēsia, ន័យត្រង់គឺ "ហៅឲ្យមកជួយ" ឬ "ហៅឲ្យមកធ្វើអ្វីមួយ" ហើយជាធម្មតាពាក្យនេះត្រូវបានប្រើដើម្បីសំដៅទៅលើក្រុមមនុស្សដែលត្រូវបានហៅមកឲ្យរួបរួមគ្នា ដើម្បីបំពេញមុខងារមួយចំនួន ជាពិសេសបណ្ដាលជននៅទីក្រុង ដូចមាននិយាយក្នុងកិច្ចការ ១៩:៣២-៤១ ជាពាក្យក្នុងព្រះគម្ពីរសញ្ញាថ្មី សំដៅទៅលើក្រុមជំនុំគ្រីស្ទាន (ទាំងក្រុមក្នុងតំបន់ ឬរូបកាយរបស់ពួកអ្នកដែលមានជំនឿ)។

នៅក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេស ពាក្យ "church" មកពីភាសាអង់គ្លេសសម័យដើម cirice, ដែលមានប្រភពមកពីភាសាអាឡឺម៉ង់ខាងលិច *kirika, ហើយមកពីពាក្យក្រិក κυριακή kuriakē, មានន័យថា "របស់ព្រះអម្ចាស់"។ ពាក្យ Kuriakē (ពាក្យកាត់របស់ κυριακὴ οἰκία kuriakē oikia) ដែលសំដៅលើ "ក្រុមជំនុំ" មានន័ថា "ដំណាក់របស់ព្រះអម្ចាស់" ឬ ἐκκλησία κυριακή ekklēsia kuriakē មានន័យថា "ក្រុមជំនុំរបស់ព្រះអម្ចាស់"។[៥] ក្រុមជំនុំគ្រីស្ទានជាច្រើនជួនកាលត្រូវបានហៅថា κυριακόν kuriakon (មាន័យថា "របស់ព្រះអម្ចាស់") នៅក្នុងភាសាក្រិក តាំងពីសតវត្សទី៤។[៦]
