본 대회는 아시아의 코로나19 범유행으로 인해 2020년 3월 4일 이후로 대회 진행이 중단되었다.[3] 이후 2020년 7월 9일, 아시아 축구 연맹이 2020년 9월 14일에 대회를 재개할 것을 선언하면서 대회가 재개되었다.[4] 리그 재개 후 모든 경기들은 카타르에서 개최된다.
시드 배정과 참가 팀
조 추첨은 2019년 12월 10일 16:30(UTC+8)에 말레이시아의 쿠알라룸푸르에 위치한 AFC 하우스에서 진행하였다.[5] 32개 팀은 4팀씩 8개의 그룹으로 분할되며, 서부 지역 4개 조(A-D조)와 동부 지역 4개 조(E-H조)로 나누어 배정된다. 같은 협회 소속의 팀들은 같은 조에 배정될 수 없다.
서부 지역의 경우, 국가 보호로 인해 협회가 추첨하지 않았다. 각 팀에 대해 그룹 포지션을 결정하기 위해 한 개 이상의 조 추첨자 (아랍에미리트, 사우디아라비아, 카타르, 이란)가있는 4개의 협회 각각에 대해 추첨을 통해 각 팀의 그룹 위치를 결정했다:

동부 지역의 경우, 조 추첨자는 3팀과 2개(대한민국, 중국)의 협회가 추첨을 통해 협회 순서를 결정했다. 협회 추첨 후, 각 팀에 대해 그룹 포지션을 결정하기 위해 한 개 이상의 조 추첨자 (대한민국, 중국, 일본, 오스트레일리아)가있는 4개의 협회 각각에 대해 추첨을 통해 각 팀의 그룹 위치를 결정했다:

다음 32개 팀이 조별리그 조 추첨에 들어갔는데, 24팀이 바로 참가하고 예선플레이오프 승자 8팀이 포함되었으며, 같은 협회 소속의 팀들은 같은 조에 배정될 수 없다.
In the group stage, each group is played on a double round-robin basis, with matches played home-and-away before the suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but moved to centralised venues after restart. The winners and runners-up of each group advance to the round of 16 of the knockout stage.
순위 결정 방식
The teams are ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss). If tied on points, tiebreakers are applied in the following order (Regulations Article 10.5):[2]
Away goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams;(Note: this tiebreaker was removed due to matches moved to centralised venues after restart)
If more than two teams are tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams;

코로나19 범유행의 영향
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia, the Australian federal government banned foreigners travelling from China, and Football Federation Australia told the AFC that Australia could no longer host matches against Chinese teams.[8] The AFC held an emergency meeting on 4 February 2020 to determine plans for the tournament, including but not limited to rescheduling of matches in the East Region.[9] After the meeting, the AFC decided to postpone matches involving Chinese clubs from the first three match days except for Chiangrai United versus Beijing FC:[10][11]

After meetings with representatives of the member associations from the West Region held on 7–8 March 2020, it was agreed that all West Region group stage matches on matchdays 4–6 would be postponed to new dates yet to be confirmed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia.[14]
After a meeting with representatives of the member associations from the East Region held on 2 March 2020, it was agreed that group stage matches on matchdays 3–6 which could not be played would be moved to 19–20 May, 26–27 May, 16–17 June and 23–24 June.[15]

On 9 July 2020, the AFC announced the new schedule for the remaining matches, with all matches played at centralised venues. The West Region matches postponed from matchdays 3–6 would be played on 14–15, 17–18, 20–21 and 23–24 September, and the East Region matches postponed from matchdays 1–6 would be played on 16–17, 19–20, 22–23, 25–26, 28–29 October and 31 October – 1 November.[4][16] On 10 September 2020, the AFC announced that East Region group stage matches were rescheduled to be played on 18–19, 21–22, 24–25, 27–28 November, 30 November – 1 December and 3–4 December.[17]

On 16 July 2020, the AFC announced that Qatar would host all West Region matches after restart.[18] On 27 July 2020, the AFC announced that Malaysia would host the East Region matches of Groups G and H after restart.[19] However, on 9 October 2020, the AFC announced that following an agreement with Qatar Football Association, all East Region matches after restart would also be played in Qatar.[20]

↑ 가나다라마바사아자차The Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran received a letter from the Asian Football Confederation on 17 January 2020 announcing that teams from Iran would not be allowed to host their home matches in their country due to security concerns.[24][25] The four AFC Champions League teams from Iran announced on 18 January 2020 that they would withdraw from the tournament if the ban was not reversed.[26][27] The AFC announced on 23 January 2020 that any group stage matches which the Iranian teams were supposed to host on matchdays 1, 2 and 3 would be switched with the corresponding away matches to allow time to reassess the security concerns in the country.[28][29][30]

↑ 가나다라마바사아자차카타파하거너The AFC announced on 29 January 2020 that the group stage matches which Chinese teams were supposed to host on matchdays 1, 2, and 3 would be switched with the corresponding away matches due to the COVID-19 pandemic in China.[32][33] Later, the order of matches between Beijing FC and Melbourne Victory, Guangzhou Evergrande and Vissel Kobe, and Shanghai SIPG and Yokohama F. Marinos, were switched from the revised schedule.[34]
