ഭൗതികശാസ്ത്രത്തിൽ, ഒരു സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്ന തരംഗം, അതു സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്ന രദിശക്ക് സമാന്തരമായി മാധ്യമത്തിലെ കണികകളെ ചലിപ്പിക്കുന്നുവെങ്കിൽ, അതിനെ അനുദൈർഘ്യതരംഗം (Longitudinal Waves)എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു.^[1]

വൈദ്യുതകാന്തികവികിരണമല്ലാത്ത തരംഗങ്ങളിൽ പലതും അനുദൈർഘ്യതരംഗങ്ങളാണ്. ശബ്ദതരംഗങ്ങളും മർദ്ദതരംഗങ്ങളും ഭൂകമ്പമോ, സ്ഫോടനമോ കൊണ്ടുണ്ടാവുന്ന പ്രാഥമിക തരംഗങ്ങളും (Primary waves, P-waves), അനുദൈർഘ്യതരംഗങ്ങൾക്ക് ഉദാഹരണങ്ങളാണ്.

ശബ്ദതരംഗങ്ങളുടെ സ്ഥാനാന്തരവും (Displacement) ആവൃത്തിയും (Frequency) സമയവും തമ്മിലുള്ള ബന്ധം കാണിക്കുന്ന സമവാക്യം താഴെ നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

c തരംഗത്തിന്റെ വേഗത (Speed)
ω തരംഗത്തിന്റെ കോണീയാവൃത്തി / ഘൂർണനാവൃത്തി/വർത്തുലാവൃത്തി (Angular frequency)

ശബ്ദതരംഗങ്ങളുടെ സഞ്ചാരവേഗത, അതു സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്ന മാധ്യമത്തിന്റെ സ്വഭാവം, താപം, സമ്മർദ്ദം എന്നിവ ആശ്രയിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
