അന്ധകാര യുഗത്തിൽ, ശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെ വെളിച്ചം എത്താതിരുന്ന കാലത്ത് ശാസ്ത്രീയ നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങളിലൂടെ ലോകത്തിനു പുതിയ വെളിച്ചം നല്കാൻ യത്നിച്ച പ്രതിഭാശാലിയായ ഒരു ശാസ്ത്രകാരനായിരുന്നു ജൊഹാൻ കെപ്ലർ. ഗ്രഹചലന നിയമങ്ങൾ അവിഷ്കരിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ജ്യോതിശാസ്ത്രത്തിൽ ഒരു പുതിയ യുഗത്തിന് തുടക്കം കുറിച്ചത് കെപ്ലർ എന്ന ശാസ്ത്രകാരനാണ് . ജർമനിയിലെവീൽസർ സ്ടാറ്റ് എന്ന നഗരത്തിൽ ഒരു പട്ടാളക്കാരന്റെ മകനായിട്ടാണ് 1571 ഡിസംബർ 27നു ജൊഹാൻ കെപ്ലർ ജനിച്ചത്‌. നന്നേ ചെറുപ്പത്തിൽ തന്നെ കെപ്ലറുടെ ആരോഗ്യം ക്ഷയിച്ചു പോയിരുന്നു. മൂന്നാം വയസ്സിൽ പിടിപെട്ട വസൂരിരോഗം കാരണം കെപ്ലർക്കു കാഴ്ച ശക്തി കുറഞ്ഞു പോവുകയും കൈകളുടെ സ്വാധീനശക്തി നഷ്ടപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു. ഇത് കാരണം ഭാരിച്ച ജോലികളൊന്നും ചെയ്യാൻ കെല്പില്ലെന്നു മനസ്സിലാക്കിയതിനാൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനെ പിതാവ് വൈദിക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിനു അയക്കുകയാണ് ചെയ്തത്. വൈദിക പഠനത്തിനായി ടൂബിന്ജി സർവകലാശാലയിൽ ആയിരുന്നു കെപ്ലർ ചേർന്നത്‌ . അവിടെനിന്നു 1588 ൽബിരുദവും 1591 ൽ മാസ്റ്റർ ബിരുദവും അദ്ദേഹം കരസ്ഥമാക്കി.
