ഭരണഘടന പ്രകാരം ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കയുടെ രാഷ്ട്രത്തലവനും ഗവൺമെന്റിന്റെ അദ്ധ്യക്ഷനുമാണ്‌ പ്രസിഡന്റ്. 1961 മുതൽ1994വരെ, രാഷ്ട്രത്തലവൻ സ്റ്റേറ്റ് പ്രസിഡന്റ് എന്നാണ് അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്. സൗത്ത് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ പാർലിമന്റിന്റെ അധോസഭയായ ദേശീയ അസംബ്ലിയാണ് പ്രസിഡന്റിനെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നത്. സാധാരണയായി ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ സീറ്റ് ലഭിക്കുന്ന പാർട്ടിയുടെ നേതാവാണ് പ്രസിഡന്റ് ആകാറുള്ളത്. വർണവിവേചനം അവസാനിച്ചതിനു ശേഷമുള്ള കാലത്തിൽ, തുടർച്ചയായി രണ്ട് വട്ടം പ്രസിഡന്റ് പദവിയിൽ എത്തിയത് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ നാഷണൽ കോൺഗ്രസ്സിന്റെ പ്രതിനിധികളാണ്. ഭരണഘടന പ്രകാരം 5 വർഷമാണ് പ്രസിഡന്റിന്റെ കാലാവധി^[2] പുതിയ ഭരണഘടന പ്രകാരം തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ട ആദ്യത്തെ ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കൻ പ്രസിഡന്റാണ് നെൽസൺ മണ്ടേല. ജേക്കബ് സുമയാണ് നിലവിലുള്ള (ജൂലൈ,2017) പ്രസിഡന്റ്.
