പ്ലേഗ് രോഗികളെ ചികിത്സിച്ചിരുന്ന ഡോക്ടർ ആണ് പ്ലേഗ് ഡോക്ടർ^[2].കുറെയധികം പ്ലേഗ് ബാധിതരുള്ള നഗരങ്ങൾ പകർച്ചവ്യാധികളുടെ സമയത്ത് ഇവരെ വാടകയ്ക്കെടുത്തു.നഗരം വേതനം നൽകുന്നതിനാൽ ഇവർ പാവപ്പെട്ടവരെയും പണക്കാരെയും ഒരു പോലെ ചികിത്സിച്ചു^[3].എങ്കിലും ചില ഡോക്ടർമാർ പ്രത്യേക ചികിത്സകൾക്കു പണം ഈടാക്കുന്നതിൽ കുപ്രസിദ്ധരായിരുന്നു ^[4].ഇവർ സാധാരണയായി ശരിയായി പരിശീലിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഡോക്ടർമാർ ആയിരുന്നില്ല^[5].പ്ലേഗ് ഡോക്ടർമാർ തങ്ങളുടെ കരാർ അനുസരിച്ചു എല്ലാവരെയും ചികില്സിച്ചിരുന്നു.ഇവർ "സമൂഹ പ്ലേഗ് ഡോക്ടർമാർ" എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടു^[6][7][8].

പ്ലേഗ് ചികിൽസിക്കുന്ന ഡോക്ടർമാർ തങ്ങളെ വായുവിൽക്കൂടി പകരുന്ന രോഗങ്ങളിൽ നിന്ന് രക്ഷിക്കാൻ ധരിച്ചിരുന്ന വേഷമായിരുന്നു പ്ലേഗ് ഡോക്ടർ വേഷം.പതിനേഴാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ഉദ്ഭവിച്ച ഈ വേഷം ഒരു മേൽക്കോട്ടും സുഗന്ധ വസ്തുക്കൾ നിറച്ച,പക്ഷിയുടെ കൊക്ക് പോലുള്ള മുഖം മൂടിയും കൈയുറയും ബൂട്ടും വക്കുള്ള തൊപ്പിയും ഒരു പുറം ഓവർ കോട്ടും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നവയായിരുന്നു..^[9].മുഖം മൂടിയുടെ കണ്ണിന്റെ ഭാഗത്ത് തുറക്കാവുന്ന ഗ്ലാസും മൂക്കിന്റെ ഭാഗത്ത് പക്ഷികളുടെത് പോലുള്ള കൊക്കും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.^[10]രണ്ടു നാസാദ്വാരങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഈ മുഖം മൂടിയിൽ സുഗന്ധ വസ്തുക്കള വെക്കാമായിരുന്നു. ^[11].കൊക്കിൽ ഉണങ്ങിയ പൂവുകളോ,ഔഷധ സസ്യങ്ങളോ,കർപ്പൂരമോ വെക്കാമായിരുന്നു.^[12][13].അക്കാലത്ത് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത് ദുർഗന്ധങ്ങളിൽ കൂടിയാണ് രോഗങ്ങള പടരുന്നത്‌ എന്നായിരുന്നു.അതിനാൽ ദുർഗന്ധങ്ങൾ തടയാൻ വേണ്ടിയായിരുന്നു ഇങ്ങനെ സുഗന്ധവസ്തുക്കൾ വെച്ചിരുന്നത്.^[14][15].പൈശാചിക ഗന്ധങ്ങളെ തടഞ്ഞ്,മുഖം മൂടിയിലെ ഔഷധ സസ്യങ്ങൾ തങ്ങളെ പ്ലേഗിൽ നിന്ന് രക്ഷിക്കുമെന്ന് ഡോക്ടർമാർ വിശ്വസിച്ചിരുന്നു.^[6]

ഈ വേഷത്തിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന വക്കുള്ള തുകൽ തൊപ്പി തൊഴിൽ തിരിച്ചറിയാൻ സഹായിച്ചിരുന്നു.^[16][17]പ്ലേഗ് രോഗികളെ തൊടാതെ അവരെ പരിശോധിക്കാനും^[18],ആളുകളെ അകറ്റി നിർത്താനും^[19],രോഗികളുടെ ഹൃദയ മിടിപ്പ് എടുക്കാനും^[20][21] മരം കൊണ്ടുള്ള വടികൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നു.

ചരിത്രകാരന്മാർ പ്ലേഗ് ഡോക്ടർ വേഷത്തിന്റെ കണ്ടുപിടിത്തത്തിന്റെ ബഹുമതി നല്കുന്നത് ചാൾസ് ഡി ലൊർമെനാണ്^[22].ഒരു പടച്ചട്ട പോലെയാണ് ഇത്തരം വേഷങ്ങൾ നിർമ്മിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്^[23].ഒരു പക്ഷിയുടെത് പോലെയുള്ള കൊക്കും,കണ്ണടയും ഇവയിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു^[24].
