1938 ഏപ്രിൽ 6 ന് ഉത്തർപ്രദേശിലെ അലഹബാദിലാണ് വിനോദ് പ്രകാശ് ശർമ്മ ജനിച്ചത്.[1] പ്രാദേശിക വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിന് ശേഷം അലഹബാദ് സർവകലാശാലയിൽ ചേർന്നു. അവിടെ നിന്ന് 1960 ൽ എംഎസ്‌സിയും 1964 ൽ ഡിഫിലും നേടി. 1965 ൽ അമേരിക്കയിലെ ഇന്ത്യാനയിലെ സൗത്ത് ബെൻഡിലേക്ക് പോയ അദ്ദേഹം നോട്രെ ഡാം സർവകലാശാലയിൽ പോസ്റ്റ് ഡോക്ടറൽ റിസർച്ച് അസോസിയേറ്റായി ചേർന്നു, പക്ഷേ പിന്നീട് അമേരിക്കയിലെ പർഡ്യൂ സർവകലാശാലയിലേക്ക് മാറി. ശർമ്മ 1968 ൽ 1979 ചെയ്ത DSC പൂർത്തിയാക്കാൻ, വീണ്ടും അലഹബാദ് സർവകലാശാലയിലേക്ക് തിരികെയെത്തി.[3]

1969 ൽ ഡെറാഡൂണിലെ ഉയർന്ന പ്രദേശത്തുള്ള ഫോറസ്റ്റ് റിസർച്ച് ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ടിൽ പൂൾ ഓഫീസറായി ശർമ്മ തന്റെ ഔദ്യോഗിക ജീവിതം ആരംഭിച്ചു. ഒരു വർഷത്തിനുശേഷം, ലോകാരോഗ്യ സംഘടന സ്പോൺസർ ചെയ്ത ഇന്ത്യൻ കൗൺസിൽ ഓഫ് മെഡിക്കൽ റിസർച്ച് പ്രോജക്ടിൽ സീനിയർ സയന്റിസ്റ്റായി കുളിസിൻ കൊതുകുകളുടെ ജനിതക നിയന്ത്രണത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് ഫവേഷണത്തിന് 1970 ൽ ചേർന്നു, അവിടെ 1975 വരെ അദ്ദേഹം ജോലി ചെയ്തു. 1976 ൽ ഡെപ്യൂട്ടി ഡയറക്ടറായി 2 വർഷത്തെ നിയമനത്തിനായി അടുത്തതായി അദ്ദേഹം വെക്ടർ കൺട്രോൾ റിസർച്ച് സെന്ററിലേക്കും മലേറിയ റിസർച്ച് യൂണിറ്റിലേക്കും പോയി. 1978 ൽ ന്യൂ ഡെൽഹിയിലെ മലേറിയ റിസർച്ച് സെന്ററിൽ ഡെപ്യൂട്ടി ഡയറക്ടറായി ചേർന്നു. മലേറിയ ഗവേഷണ കേന്ദ്രത്തിലെ തന്റെ പഠനകാലത്ത് അദ്ദേഹം കേന്ദ്രത്തിന്റെ നവീകരണത്തിനായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി, അതിന്റെ ഫലമായി കേന്ദ്രം കേന്ദ്രസർക്കാർ നവീകരിച്ചു, 1982 ൽ നാഷണൽ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഓഫ് മലേറിയ റിസർച്ച് എന്ന് പുനർനാമകരണം ചെയ്തു. 1998 ൽ ഇന്ത്യൻ കൗൺസിൽ ഓഫ് മെഡിക്കൽ റിസർച്ചിന്റെ അഡീഷണൽ ഡയറക്ടർ ജനറലായി താൻ വിരമിച്ച സ്ഥലത്ത് അതിന്റെ ആദ്യ ഡയറക്ടറായി.
