ബാൾട്ടിക്ക് കടലിലുള്ള ഗൾഫ് ഓഫ് ഫിൻലൻഡിന്റെ മുനമ്പത്ത് നേവാ നദിയുടെ തീരത്തായി സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന റഷ്യൻ നഗരവും റഷ്യയിലെ ഒരു ഫെഡറൽ സബ്ജക്ടുമാണ്‌ സെന്റ് പീറ്റേഴ്സ്ബർഗ്(Russian: Санкт-Петербу́рг^?·i). നഗരത്തിന്റെ മറ്റു നാമങ്ങൾ പെട്രോഗാർഡ് (Петрогра́д, 1914–1924), ലെനിൻഗ്രാഡ് (Ленингра́д, 1924–1991) എന്നിവയാണ്‌. പൊതുവേ നഗരം പീറ്റേഴ്സ്ബർഗ് (Петербу́рг) എന്നും അനൗദ്യോഗികമായി പീറ്റർ (Пи́тер) എന്നുമാത്രമുള്ള പേരിലും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.

റഷ്യൻ ത്സാർ പീറ്റർ ഒന്നാമൻ 1703 മേയ് 27നാണ്‌ സെന്റ് പീറ്റേഴ്സ്ബർഗ് സ്ഥാപിച്ചത്. 200ല്പരം വർഷങ്ങൾ ഈ നഗരം റഷ്യൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാനമായിരുന്നു. 1918ൽ 1917ലെ റഷ്യൻ വിപ്ലവത്തിനുശേഷം തലസ്ഥാനം മോസ്കോയിലേയ്ക്ക് മാറ്റി.^[10]

റഷ്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും പാശ്ചാത്യവത്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ട നഗരമായാണ്‌ പൊതുവേ സെന്റ് പീറ്റേഴ്സ്ബർഗ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.^[11].1914 മുതൽ 1924 വരെ പെട്രോഗ്രാദ് എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഇവിടം ലെനിന്റെ മരണശേഷം ലെനിൻഗ്രാദായി.തുടർന്ന് ഗോർബച്ചേവിന്റെ ഭരണകാലത്ത് വീണ്ടും സെന്റ് പീറ്റേഴ്സ്ബർഗാക്കി. ലോകത്തിൽ ഒരു ദശലക്ഷത്തിനുമേൽ ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള നഗരങ്ങളിൽ ഏറ്റവും വടക്കായി സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന നഗരവുമാണ്‌ സെന്റ് പീറ്റേഴ്സ്ബർഗ്. 200ൽ പരം വർഷങ്ങൾ റഷ്യയുടെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ സാംസ്കാരിക തലസ്ഥാനമായിരുന്ന നഗരത്തെ നോർത്തേൺ ക്യാപ്പിറ്റൽ അഥവാ വടക്കൻ തലസ്ഥാനം എന്ന് പൊതുവേ വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്.രണ്ടാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധകാലത്ത് നാസിപ്പട ഇവിടം ആക്രമിച്ച് പത്തുലക്ഷം പേരെ കൊന്നൊടുക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.

നേവാ നദിയുടെ അഴിമുഖത്തായി 101 ദ്വീപുകളുടെ സമുച്ചയമായ നഗരം 1703 മേയ് 27-നാണ് സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്. പീറ്റർ ദ ഗ്രേറ്റ് ചക്രവർത്തിയാണ് നഗരം നിർമ്മിച്ചത്. എങ്കിലും ക്രിസ്തുശിഷ്യനായ പത്രോസ് ശ്ലീഹായുടെ നാമത്തിൽ നിന്നുമാണ് നഗരത്തിന് ഈ പേരു ലഭിച്ചത്. പിന്നീട് പല തവണ ഈ പേര് മാറ്റാൻ ശ്രമം നടന്നിരുന്നു. 1914 മുതൽ 1924 വരെ പെട്രോഗ്രാഡ് എന്നും 1924 ഫെബ്രുവരി മുതൽ ലെനിൻഗ്രാഡ് എന്നു പുനർനാമകരണം ചെയ്തു. എന്നാൽ പെരിസ്‌ട്രോയ്ക യുഗത്തിനു ശേഷം 1991 മുതൽ നഗരം വീണ്ടും വിശുദ്ധന്റെ പേരിലേക്കു തന്നെ പുനർനാമകരണം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു.
