1962ൽ ഖനിയിൽ തീപ്പിടുത്തമുണ്ടായതിന്റെ യഥാർത്ഥ കാരണത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് വ്യത്യസ്ത അഭിപ്രായങ്ങളുണ്ട്. എന്തിരുന്നാലും തീ തുടർന്നും ഭൂമിക്കടിയിൽ കത്തിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ് എന്ന് കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. തീ ജനശ്രദ്ധയാകർഷിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങിയത് 1979ൽ മേയറുടെ കീഴിലുള്ള പെട്രോൾ പമ്പിലെ പെട്രോളിന്റെ താപനില ഉയർന്നതായി ശ്രദ്ധയിൽപ്പെട്ടതിനെത്തുടർന്നാണ്.[9] പിന്നീട് 1981ൽ 4 അടി വീതിയും 150 അടി താഴ്ചയുമുള്ള ഒരു ഗർത്തം ഒരു വീടിന്റെ പുറകിൽ രൂപപ്പെട്ടു. ഈ ഗർത്തത്തിൽനിന്ന് ബഹിർഗമിച്ച ആവിയിൽ മാരകമായ അളവിൽ കാർബൺ മോണോക്സൈഡ് ഉള്ളതായി ശ്രദ്ധയിൽപ്പെട്ടു.[10] ഇതിനെത്തുടർന്ന് പട്ടണം ജനവാസയോഗമല്ലായെന്ന് കണക്കാക്കുകയും സർക്കാർ 42 ദശലക്ഷം ഡോളർ ജനങ്ങളെ മാറ്റിപ്പാർപ്പിക്കാനായി നീക്കി വയ്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.[11]
തുടർന്ന് ആയിരത്തോളം ആളുകൾ മാറിത്താമസിച്ചു, അഞ്ഞൂറോളം കെട്ടിടങ്ങൾ പൊളിച്ചു.[12] എന്നാൽ പല പട്ടണവാസികളും ഇതൊക്കെ തങ്ങളുടെ ഭൂമിയിലെ ഖനനാവകാശം സൂത്രത്തിൽ കൈക്കലാക്കാനുള്ള ഒരു തന്ത്രമാണെന്നു കരുതിപ്പോരുകയും സർക്കാരുമായി പല വ്യവഹാരങ്ങളിൽ ഏർപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു.[13][12][14][15]
1992ൽ ബറോയിലെ എല്ലാ സ്വകാര്യഭൂസ്വത്തും സർക്കാർ ഏറ്റെടുത്തതായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു. 2002ൽ പോസ്റ്റൽ സർവീസ് സെൻട്രാലിയയുടെ പിൻകോഡ് നിർത്തലാക്കി.[8] 2013 ഒക്ടോബർ 29ന് സെൻട്രാലിയയിൽ അവശേഷിച്ച ഏഴു പേരുമായി സർക്കാർ ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ കരാർ പ്രകാരം അവർക്ക് തങ്ങളുടെ ശിഷ്ടകാല ജീവിതം ഇവിടെയുള്ള തങ്ങളുടെ സ്വകാര്യഭൂമിയിൽ തങ്ങാനും അതിനുശേഷം പ്രസ്തുത ഭൂമി സർക്കാരിലേയ്ക്ക് വക ചേർക്കാനും തീരുമാനമായി.[7]-
