This template should not be used in citation templates such as Citation Style 1 and Citation Style 2, because it includes markup that will pollute the COinS metadata they produce; see COinS in Wikipedia.

This template provides way to wrap wiki markup in (single) square brackets. More importantly, it helps to keep the markup free of line noise and thus easier to edit.

This template is a simple wrapper around the [ and ] HTML entities that produce starting and ending brackets, respectively.

The template cannot output just an ending bracket. You will have to use ] to produce the "]" ending bracket.
