Note that if the authority is not known, the "|" must still be present after the taxon name. If a "connecting term" is present in a botanical name, such as "subsp.", "var." or "f.", then this should not be italicized. The template should automatically de-italicize connecting terms. If this fails, you can put '' either side of the connecting term to de-italicize it.
