ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੁਨੀਕੋਡ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਕੁਝ ਨੁਕਤੇ (ਇਸ ਲੇਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਕੁਝ ਵੀ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਪਰਿੰਟ ਕਰ ਲਵੋ) ਵਿੰਡੋਜ਼ ਐਕਸ ਪੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਅਪਗਰੇਡਡ ਸਿਸਟਮਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਯੁਨੀਕੋਡ ਦੇ ਜਰੀਏ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲਿਖਣ ਲਈ ਕੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ? ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁਝ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਗੱਲਾਂ, ਨੁਕਤੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਸਕੋਗੇ। ਯੁਨੀਕੋਡ ਨੂੰ ਵਰਤਣਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਸ਼ੌਕ ਬਣ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਵਰਤਣ ਦਾ ਸੱਦਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਲੋਂ ਵਰਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਅਹਿਮ ਨੁਕਤੇ ਇੱਥੇ ਸਾਂਝੇ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਹੌਂਸਲਾ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ, ਇਹ ਸਭ ਇਸ ਇੰਟਰਨੈੱਟ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਰਬਾਨੀ ਸਦਕਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ/ਸਿੱਖਣ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਗ ਹੀ ਹੈ, ਬਹੁਤੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਹੁਣ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਯੁਨੀਕੋਡ ਨੂੰ ਵਿੰਡੋਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਨਸਟਾਲ/ਲਗਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? :-

੧। ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੇਠ ਲਿਖੇ ਲਿੰਕ ਤੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੀ ਕੀਬੋਰਡ ਲੇਅ-ਆਊਟ ਮੁਫ਼ਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਾਊਨ ਲੋਡ ਕਰੋ:

ਸਾਈਟ ਤੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਸਫੇ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਸਿਰਲੇਖ Custom Punjabi/Gurmukhi Unicode Keyboards ਅਧੀਨ ਨੰਬਰ ੨ ਨੂੰ ਡਾਊਨ ਲੋਡ ਕਰੋ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਪਿਊਟਰ ਦੀ ਡਿਸਕਟੌਪ ਤੇ ਸੇਵ ਕਰ ਲਵੋ। ਇਹ ਲੇਅ-ਆਊਟ "ਡੀ ਆਰ ਚਾਤਰਿਕ"(dr chatrik fonts) ਫੌਂਟਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧਿਤ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਨਾਲ ਵਰਤਣੇ ਬੇਹੱਦ ਸੌਖੇ ਅਤੇ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਫੌਂਟਸ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਫਾਈਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਕੀਬੋਰਡ ਲੇਅ-ਆਊਟ ਦੀ ਤਸਵੀਰ ਵੀ ਹੈ।

੨। ਫਾਈਲ ਨੂੰ ਅਨਜਿੱਪ(unzip) ਕਰ ਕੇ ਕੰਪਿਊਟਰ ਦੀ ਡਿਸਕਟੌਪ ਤੇ ਜਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਡਾਕੂਮਿੰਟਸ ਫੋਲਡਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੇਵ ਕਰੋ। ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਡਬਲ ਕਲਿੱਕ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਪਿਊਟਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਨਸਟਾਲ ਕਰ ਲਵੋ।

੩। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ "ਸਟਾਰਟ"(start) ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ "ਕੰਟਰੋਲ ਪੈਨਲ"(control panel) ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਓ, ਕੰਟਰੋਲ ਪੈਨਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ "ਸਵਿੱਚ ਟੂ ਕਲਾਸਕ"(switch to classic) ਨੂੰ ਕਲਿੱਕ ਕਰੋ।

ਹੁਣ "ਰੀਜ਼ਨਲ ਐਂਡ ਲੈਂਗੂਏਜ਼ ਔਪਸ਼ਨ"(regional and language options) ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਓ।

ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ "ਲੈਂਗੂਏਜ਼"(language) ਖਾਨੇ ਤੇ ਕਲਿੱਕ ਕਰੋ।

ਹੇਠਾਂ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਖਾਨੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਟਿੱਕ ਮਾਰਕ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਓਕੇ ਕਰੋ, ਜਦੋਂ ਇਹ ਇਨਸਟਾਲ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਕੰਪਿਊਟਰ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਵਿੰਡੋਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਰੀਸਟਾਰਟ/ਦੋਬਾਰਾ ਚਲਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਕਹੇ ਗਾ, ਵਿੰਡੋਜ਼ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਮੰਨੋ ਅਤੇ ਕੰਪਿਊਟਰ ਦੋਬਾਰਾ ਸਟਾਰਟ ਕਰੋ।

੪। ਕੰਪਿਊਟਰ ਰੀਸਟਾਰਟ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, "ਕੰਟਰੋਲ ਪੈਨਲ"(control panel) ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ "ਰੀਜ਼ਨਲ ਲੈਂਗੂਏਜ਼ ਔਪਸ਼ਨ"(regional and language options) ਵਿੱਚ ਫਿਰ ਜਾਓ, "ਲੈਂਗੂਏਜ਼"(language) ਖਾਨੇ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਅੱਧ-ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਸੱਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ "ਡਿਟੇਲਜ਼"(details) ਨੂੰ ਕਲਿੱਕ ਕਰੋ।"ਡਿਟੇਲਜ਼"(details) ਵਿੱਚ "ਸੈਟਿੰਗਸ"(settings) ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਓ ਅਤੇ "ਐਡ"(add) ਬਟਨ ਤੇ ਕਲਿੱਕ ਕਰੋ। ਛੋਟੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਵਿੰਡੋਜ਼ ਖੁੱਲੇਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚ "ਇਨਪੁੱਟ"(input) ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਕਰੋ ਅਤੇ "ਕੀਬੋਰਡ ਲੇਅ-ਆਊਟ"(keyboard layout) ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਲਿੱਪੀ ਲੇਅ-ਆਊਟ ਕਰੋ।

"ਓਕੇ"(okay) ਕਲਿੱਕ ਕਰੋ ਅਤੇ "ਟਾਸਕਬਾਰ"(task bar) ਤੇ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਸੱਜੀ ਕਲਿੱਕ ਕਰੋ ਅਤੇ “ਟੂਲਬਾਰ”(toolbar) ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ "ਲੈਂਗੂਏਜ਼ ਬਾਰ"(language bar) ਨੂੰ ਔਨ ਕਰੋ, ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਹੇਠਾਂ "ਟਾਸਕਬਾਰ"(task bar) ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਗ੍ਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ "ਈ ਇਨ (EN)" ਲਿਖਿਆ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ, ਉਸ ਤੇ ਕਲਿੱਕ ਕਰੋ ਅਤੇ "ਪੀ ਏ (PA)" ਨੂੰ ਔਨ ਕਰੋ। ਜਦੋਂ ਵੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਣਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਜਾਂ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਲੈਂਗੂਏਜ਼ ਮਤਲਬ ਅੰਗ੍ਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਾਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਬਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਲੈਂਗੂਏਜ਼ ਔਪਸ਼ਨ ਔਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਪਵੇਗਾ। ਹੇਠਾਂ ਬਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ "ਈ ਇਨ" ਜਾਂ "ਪੀ ਇਨ" ਲਿਖਿਆ ਜਰੂਰ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਨੋਟ: (ਤੁਸੀਂ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਬਦਲਣ ਲਈ ਕੀਬੋਰਡ ਤੋਂ alt+shift ਵੀ ਵਰਤ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ, ਇਹ ਬੇਹੱਦ ਸੌਖਾ ਤਰੀਕਾ ਹੈ।)

ਨੋਟ: ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਲਿਖਣ ਵਾਲ਼ੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਜਦੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਖੋਹਲਦੇ ਹੋ ਤਾਂ ਹਰ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਲਈ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸੈਟਿੰਗ ਹਰ ਵਾਰ ਬਦਲਣੀ ਪਵੇਗੀ। ਜੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇੰਟਰਨੈਟ ਇਕਸਪਲੋਰਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਲਿਖਣਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸੈਟਿੰਗ ਬਦਲਣੀ ਪਵੇਗੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੰਪਿਊਟਰ ਤੇ ਲੌਗ ਇਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ ਤਾਂ ਖਿਆਲ ਰੱਖੋ ਕਿ ਟਾਸਕਬਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹੜੀ ਲੈਂਗੂਏਜ਼ ਦੀ ਸੈਟਿੰਗ ਹੈ? EN ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਲੌਗ ਇਨ ਕਰ ਸਕੋਗੇ। ਹਰ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਵਰਤਣ ਵੇਲੇ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ (language) ਬਦਲਣੀ ਪਵੇਗੀ। ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਥੋੜਾ ਹੋਰ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੱਗੇਗਾ ਹਰ ਵਾਰ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਬਦਲਣੀ ਪਰ ਹੌਲ਼ੀ ਹੌਲ਼ੀ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਆਦਤ ਪੈ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ ਤੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮਾਂ ਬੋਲੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਪਿਊਟਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਲਿਖਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਆਓਗੇ!

The following table compares how a correctly enabled computer would render the following scripts with how your computer renders them:

If the rendering on your computer matches the rendering in the images for the scripts, then you have already enabled complex text support! You should be able to view text correctly in that script. However this does not mean you will be able to edit text in that script. To edit such text you need to have the appropriate text entry software on your operating system.

These operating systems contain no support for Gurmukhi Unicode script. Downloading Internet Explorer 6.0 should enable you to view Gurmukhi script on these operating systems but you will not be able to edit any Panjabi text. If after downloading Internet Explorer, you still cannot view Panjabi scripts please install an Unicode font (See bottom of this page)

Mozilla Firefox does not support Panjabi script on these operating systems unless a modified version of the program is used, such as the one found here.

Complex text support needs to be manually enabled.

• Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Regional Options > General [Tab].
• In the "Language settings for this system" frame, check the box next to "Indic".
• Copy the appropriate files from the Windows 2000 CD when prompted.
• If prompted, reboot your computer once the files have been installed.

We recommend you use Baraha IME phonetic input software

• Select "Input Locale" [Tab].
• Click the "Add" button in the "Installed input locales" frame.
• Select the desired language in the "Input Locale" drop-down box on the "Add Input Locale" dialogue box.
• Now select the appropriate keyboard you wish to use.
• Gurmukhi Unicode Keyboard based on DrChatrikWeb font can also be used to input Panjabi script.
• For people who cannot download the above software, or for people on the move, on line panjabi virtual keyboard which provides an online virtual (visual) keyboard, you can use the following application, copy the text on the clipboard and then copy it back to the Wikipedia editing box.

Complex text support needs to be manually enabled.

• Go to Start > Control Panel.
• If you are in "Category View" select the icon that says "Date, Time, Language and Regional Options" and then select "Regional and Language Options".
• If you are in Classic View select the icon that says "Regional and Language Options".
• Select the "Languages" tab and make sure you select the option saying "Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)". A confirmation message should now appear - press "OK" on this confirmation message.
• Allow the OS to install necessary files from the Windows XP CD and then reboot if prompted.

After this, all future sessions of Mozilla or Firefox will have Indic language support. This will work only on Firefox compiled with ctl support. Only the firefox binaries supplied by Fedora Core 4 and 5, Ubuntu Linux, and Kate OS are compiled with this ctl and set this option, by default.

For Ubuntu 6.06, this support has been turned off due to speed issues. To enable support, you must type MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=0 firefox. Future sessions do not remember this setting, so it must be repeated.

• Go to Applications > Preferences > Keyboard.
• Select the "Layouts" tab.
• Select the keyboard for the language or script you wish to use from the "Available Layouts" frame and then press "Add".
• Press "Close" to discard the dialogue box.

Whenever the number 9 (੯ ) is typed in Gurumukhi script, the following Gurumukhi characters are merged with it. Fro example, 99 written in Gurumukhi appears joined on some versions of Firefox.
