Dear Wikimedians,

I would like to introduce you all to Thomas, a fourth year law student at the National Law University Jodhpur. He has joined CIS-A2K as an intern and will be developing a primer on Copyright and Creative Commons for the use of Indian Wikimedians.

Thomas' aim is to cater to the broad spectrum of Wikimedia users and to provide both an introduction to copyright law and to address more advanced questions of copyright law that users might encounter with regards to issues like digitisation, public domain works, etc.

His approach thus far has been to comb the India Mailing List to discover the common questions or concerns that Indian Wikimedians face while dealing with content. He hopes to then transpose answers to these queries along with general copyright related information onto a primer following a mixture of a FAQ based and prose based format to allow for better transposition of information as well as to allow for better readability and engagement.

As you will realise, this approach suffers from a number of defects: 1. There are a large number of queries or concerns that users might have which are not addressed onto the mailing lists and are near impossible to pre-empt. 2. There are a number of unique processes that Wikimedia implements (like the “precautionary principle”) that is unique to the context of copyright and Wikimedia which he is yet to familiarise himself and such a familiarity can only be built with periodic use. 3. There are a large number of Wikimedians who might be unrepresented on the Mailing List and might have queries regarding the use of content.

To this end, Thomas hopes to get some support from the community here in terms of: 1. Asking any queries that you may have regarding copyright law and its application to the Wikimedia Universe. 2. Passing along any queries or issues that you may have heard of from other users, so that this may be introduced. 3. Passing along any other information that may be specifically relevant to this endeavour, in terms of experience with Wikimedia policy, practice that has been developed over the past few years and the like.

Any support in this regard would be extremely helpful. This primer will of course be a work in progress for subsequent authors to edit and build upon, true to the Wikimedia ethos, however for the sake of at least an initial completeness, I request you to reply in over the course of this week, latest by the 3rd of January 2015. As most of you are aware, the Centre for Internet and Society's Access To Knowledge program (CIS-A2K) conducted the first Wikipedia Train-the-Trainer (TTT) programme in 2013 with an aim to support and groom leadership skills in the community members. We are extremely thankful to all the senior Wikimedians who acted as Resource Persons for the 2013 event. Achal, Arjuna, Hari, Shymal, Tinu and Viswa! Without your help we could not have conducted it so successfully.

Greetings from Marathi language wikipedia. Sorry for not using Punjabi language I do not know Gurumukhi script, and I failed to locate en:Wikipedia:embassy page for Punjabi Wikipedia.

Marathi language has a word (& a phrase) in usage संथा similler word seems to be in use in Punjabi language. But not found in exact form in hindi or sanskrit. I am trying to understand any possible simillarity between Marathi and Punjabi words and if similler need more info about the Punjabi word. My querries are as below.

1) Which is correct Punjabi / Gurumukhi rendering for संथा whether ਸਂਥਾ or ਸੰਥਾ or both are correct or both are wrong. To proceed with this communication I am using as of now ਸਂਥਾ assuming to be the right one.

2) Meaning of word ਸਂਥਾ in one Punjabi Hindi Wiktionary is given as ਪਾਠ (devnagari = पाठ). Another online info I read was it means 'teaching proper pronounciation' (of Gurbani). are these both the meanings correct for ਸਂਥਾ ?

3) ਪਾਠ (devnagari = पाठ) has multiple meanings in Indian languages, if ਸਂਥਾ means ਪਾਠ then whether ਸਂਥਾ means just a lesson, or just recitation, or it means learning some thing, or it means effort of remembering certain text, or it means 'teaching proper pronounciation', or some other meaning ?

4) Since when ਸਂਥਾ word is in use in Punjabi language ? Whether any etymology is offered in Punjabi language for the word? Usage of this word Is likely to be Pre- Sikh era ? The term got introduced with establishment of Sikh religion ? or the term is not directly related to sikh religion but a general Punjabi term? Whether aary samajis of Punjab and Haryana also use word ਸਂਥਾ ?

Since uptil now I could not locate usage of this word in Marathi texts before 19 th century that means for Marathi language the word musage might have come little late and may be from Punjabi language. If I also get example of use of this word in old Punjabi literature (if possible along with devnagari or roman transliteration and meaning) it will help me.

Lot of thanks to both of you for your prompt reply and resourcefull help. I used google translator to understand sentences written in Gurumukhi. I realised my writing ਸਂਥਾ was wrong, ਸੰਥਾ is correct and ਸੰਥਿਆ is better option. When I checked links and info given by both of you my expectations came true that most of meanings or Marathi word संथा and ਸੰਥਾ / ਸੰਥਿਆ are almost matching.

In Punjabi language word ਸੰਥਾ is also being translated by google translator one meaning given for ਸੰਥਾ, if correct, 'order of a king' this shade of meaning is not in Marathi instead 'almost and devote following of a Guru's wishes or direction' is one of the meaning in Marathi language for संथा.
