மரியா மிட்செல் (Maria Mitchell) [pronounced "mə-RYE-ə"] (ஆகத்து 1, 1818 – ஜூன் 28, 1889) ஓர் அமெரிக்க வானியலாளர் ஆவார். இவர், 1847 இல் தொலைநோக்கியைப் பயன்படுத்தி,ஒரு வால்வெள்ளியைக் கண்டுபிடித்தார். இது பிறகு, "செல்வி மிட்செல் வால்வெள்ளி" என பெயர் இடப்பட்டது. இந்த கண்டுபிடிப்புக்காக இவர் பொற்பதக்கப் பரிசைப் பெற்றார். இப்பரிசு டென்மார்க் அரசர் நான்காம் பிரெடெரிக் அவர்களால் இவருக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டது. இப்பதக்கத்தின் மீது "Non Frustra Signorum Obitus Speculamur et Ortus" என இலத்தீனில் பொறிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது ( Georgics by Virgil (Book I, line 257 இல் இருந்து)[1] (English: "Not in vain do we watch the setting and rising of the stars").[2] Mitchell was the first American woman to work as a professional astronomer.[3][4]
பத்து பிள்ளைகளில் ஒருவராக இவர் குவேக்கர் சமயத்தில் வளர்க்கப்பட்டு, பின்னர் இவர் கிறித்துவ ஒருமைவாதவியத்துக்கு மாறியுள்ளார்.[5][6]
மரியா மிட்செல் மச்ச்சூசட், நாந்துகெட்டில் பிறந்தார்.இவர்பீட்டர் பவுல்கருக்கும் மேரிபவுல்கருக்கும் பேரப் பிள்ளை ஆவார். இவரது முதல் ஒன்றுவீட்ட உறவினர் பெஞ்சமின் பிராங்ளினுக்கு நான்காம் தலைமுறையினர் ஆகிறார். இவருக்கு ஒன்பது அண்ண்ந்தங்கைகள் உண்டு. இவரது பெற்றோராகிய வில்லியம் மிட்செலும் இலிடியா கோல்மன் மிட்செலும் குவேக்கர் சமயத்தவர்கள்.இவர் பெண்சம்மையற்ற சமுதாய அமைப்பில் பிறந்தார். என்றாலும் இவரது பெற்றோர் ஆன், பெண் மகவுகள் அனைவரையும் நன்கு படிக்க வைத்தனர். குவேக்கர் சமயத்தின் சிறப்பு ஆணுக்கும் பெண்ணுக்கும் கல்வித் தரத்தைச் சமமாக வழங்குதலே.[8]
