巴罗环形山坑壁已被后续的撞击以及切入的陨坑严重侵蚀和更改，其外观破裂、崎岖，类似一圈环坑底的山脊和山峰，其中西南壁上横跨了一座更年轻的撞击坑-直径27公里的卫星坑巴罗 A；东南壁并入了直径17公里的残迹坑-巴罗 B；东侧坑壁一道狭窄的裂谷连通了卫星坑默冬 F 的坑底；而西侧和西北壁高耸峻峭，部分壁顶与坑底落差达3400米[ 7] 戈尔德施米特环形山 。巴罗环形山坑壁平均高出周边地形1440米[ 1] [ 1] 熔岩流 掩没抚平，形成一块平坦、散布着众多微小浅坑的坑底，一些来自西面阿那克萨哥拉环形山 淡淡的射纹束 穿过了它的坑底。
巴罗环形山属于一种特殊类型的陨石坑，在冷海 以北地区特别常见。这些陨坑内部已被月海 熔岩 填塞，但不一样的是，其表面并不幽暗[ 8] 熔岩 或其它构造—包括雨海盆地在内的撞击喷发物所覆盖。巴罗环形山坑底表层地质龄估计（按小陨坑分布密度）为39-38亿年[ 9] [ 9] [ 10] [ 11]
1645年，佛兰芒 天文学家 米迦勒·弗洛伦特·范·朗伦 曾将它命名为阿马尔菲（Amalfi）[ 3] [ 12] 晨昏圈 上的巴罗环形山是清晨最有趣的月面观察对象之一[ 13] [ 14]
