扁掌龍亞科（Plioplatecarpinae）意為「接近槳的腕骨」，是有鱗目滄龍科的一科，生存於白堊紀晚期。

在1967年，戴爾·羅素（Dale Russell）將扁掌龍亞科定義為具有以下特徵：前上頜骨前方的喙小，或是沒有、第五、六、七對腦神經穿越耳後的一個孔、枕骨底部或基蝶骨有基底動脈的血管溝、方骨的上鐙骨突大，末端扁平、上隅骨的背緣呈圓形、最多有29節薦前椎、薦前的脊椎總長，短於薦後的脊椎總長、後端尾椎的神經棘略長，沒有形成明顯的尾鰭、脈弧與尾椎的椎體之間未固定、四肢關節的表面不平順^[3]。

扁掌龍亞科的化石可發現於各大洲，但澳洲的化石仍有爭議。在善於游泳的滄龍科中，扁掌龍亞科的頭部較短，身體也較短。某些研究人員認為牠們的身體靈活程度，相當於現代鰭足類。大部分扁掌龍亞科是魚食性動物，以頭足類（例如箭石）為食。體型較大的物種可能也以小型海生爬行動物為食。至少有一個屬演化出堅固、適合咬碎的牙齒，可能以貝類為食。扁掌龍亞科是群中型滄龍類，身長介於2.5到7.5公尺之間。

戴爾·羅素提出扁掌龍亞科包含兩個族：扁掌龍族、傾齒龍族^[3]。傾齒龍族已被歸類於滄龍亞科^[4]。

在2005年，Polcyn與Bell在建立了一個更大的演化支，稱為羅賽爾龍類科（Rullessosaurina），包含：海王龍亞科與扁掌龍亞科、以及牠們的姐妹分類單元（包含特提斯龍、羅塞爾龍、亞瓜拉龍）^[5]。

扁掌龍亞科首次出現於土侖階，並持續生存到馬斯垂克階末期，生存了近2,400萬年。
