法蘭西斯·勞斯(1579–1659)，現時一般均將詩歌《耶和華是我的牧者》歸於為他所創作。
《耶和華是我的牧者》（The Lord's My Shepherd）是一首較為人所認識基督教聖詩，現時一般都將其創作權歸於一名英國的清教徒法蘭西斯·勞斯。勞斯本身是一位出版宗教書籍的作者，也曾擔任伊頓公學教務長及英國下議院議長。歌詞取材自聖經中的詩篇第23篇（天主教稱作「聖詠第23篇」），並以節奏化詩篇的規格寫成。最先收錄於1650年出版的蘇格蘭節奏化詩篇集內。
至於聖詩旋律，則來自一首稱為《克里蒙》（一個位於蘇格蘭鴨巴甸郡中的村莊）的曲調，與歌詞一樣，現時普遍都將此歸於一名蘇格蘭堂區牧師的女兒、名為謝茜·西犘·艾芬
[1]，相傳是她於1871年在參與一次教堂管風琴活動時，因為一些詩篇創作曲調而應運而生，後來由於謝茜對自己的和聲不太滿意，於是便請教了一名對音樂有認識的教友大衛·格蘭特（David Grant）去重新編寫和聲，而得出現時的版本[1]。
歌詞背景
在蘇格蘭宗教改革時期，一般在聚會崇拜中所唱的詩歌，仍然是以只引用《詩篇》內容的獨頌詩篇為主。當時，蘇格蘭教會採用了1564年由約翰·諾克斯所編纂的《公用儀式書》，而《公用儀式書》內所用的詩篇曲調，是約翰·加爾文於1539年根據《日內瓦詩篇》所修訂的版本，仍然是採用節奏化詩篇的規格所寫成。會聚在頌唱時，往往只容許以齊唱的方式進行。雖然後來「公用儀式書」曾經過多次的修訂，但到了十七世紀中期，英格蘭教會與蘇格蘭教會都覺有需要採用一個全新翻譯的版本。
1641年，勞斯出版了一本採用新的「節奏化敘述」方式編寫的《詩篇》，並在奥利弗·克伦威尔的委任下，成為了西敏會議的成員，成為當時英國清教徒的代表人物。而在這版本獲得批準使用前，更要先通過長期議會的審查，另外再成立一個委員會去審議他和另一份由聖歌作者威廉·巴頓所翻譯的版本，最終，委員會花了六年去審視，並對當中的用詞進行了大量修改。
現時，雖然本曲的作詞者仍然歸於勞斯，但用字卻早在出版後被持續地修改。原來第一段的歌詞為[5]：

最終，勞斯的最終版本只有約百分之十的用字是從原稿中得到保留，而且，英國國會普遍較傾向巴頓的版本，然而，勞斯的版本最終得到採用，原因是他的版本能準確地翻譯原文，也覺察的含意。1650年，蘇格蘭教會總會批準勞斯的版本並納入於《蘇格蘭教會詩歌集》內。

本曲採用了普通格律（Common metre，簡稱C.M.），即是根據每一段歌詞的音節數目而編定相關的音樂。普通格律的格式是（8.6.8.6），即代表四句歌詞中，每句的音節數目分別是8個、6個、8個、6個。
中文版本
粵語版本最先出現於宣道出版社所出版的《青年聖歌》中，後來結集於《青年聖歌綜合本 II》中時，採用《耶和華是我的牧者》[6]，後來宣道出版社再發行《生命聖詩》時，歌名依第一句歌詞改稱為《主耶和華是我牧者》[7]。而最早出版的華語教會聖詩集《普天頌讚》，1936年初版及1977年修訂版並沒有收錄此曲[8]，直在2006年的新修定版中以附錄形式置於歌集的最後部份，編為「詩23c」[9]，歌名稱為《主耶和華我牧者》。
天主教香港教區所出版的詩歌集《頌恩》中，本曲稱為《我的善牧》，歌詞意思與聖詠第23篇相同，但歌詞與《思高本版聖經》不同[10]。另外，《頌恩》第274首《上主是我的牧者》亦以聖詠第23篇為內容的詩歌，但旋律則與《克里蒙》和謝茜·西犘·艾芬完全無關。
