    How to create a category

Let us say you have thought of a new category you want to place some articles in. To create this new category, go to one of the pages that you wish to put there, and add a category tag naming the new category to the end of the article, like this:

    [[Category:Category name]]

...where in place of category name you type the actual name of the category. When you save the page, the category should appear on the bottom line of the page. If it is indeed a new category, it will turn up in red. But this does not mean there is no such category: it might exist but with a slight difference in naming. Before you create a new category, make sure it does not already exist. In a new browser window, click on Special pages in the toolbox menu on the left side of your screen. Then click on All pages. Pick Category from the Namespace dropdown menu, and then enter the name of the category. Look over the index for synonymous categories.

Once you are sure your new name is good to go: Click on the redlink, and then click on the article creation link provided in the instructions that appear on your screen.

You will need to put a parent category on the new page, and then save the page. Going forward you can put your newly named category at the bottom of pages that you wish to add your new category to. Categories with too few pages in them are usually nominated for deletion.

Question from Xzkdeng (06:01, 14 July 2025)

Hi,Pbsouthwood! I published a change in an wiki when I am logged in. But when I looked into the history page, it showed up an ip address instead of my user name. I wonder if this is a bug. --Xzkdeng (talk) 06:01, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How sure are you that you were logged in? Was this on English Wikipedia?
I am not skilled with this type of problem, you probably need to report it to a WMF developer if you are sure that it really happened, as I do not have the access required to investigate. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 10:04, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
"Was this on English Wikipedia?" This remined me that I logged in on wikidata and then did the editing on English Wikipedia. I sould be careful not to make this kind of silly mistakes. Thanks for the help! Xzkdeng (talk) 06:38, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Logging in on one project should automatically log you in on all the others, but sometimes it does not happen. I have occasionally been caught by this, so it is worth a check if you jump between projects to make sure you are still logged in. It may be a bug, or maybe some feature I don't know about. It usually happens when I use an interwiki link to a project I have not been to for a long time. Cheers · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 07:10, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
May be checking the “Keep me logged in (for up to one year)” check box at login will help. Xzkdeng (talk) 02:00, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That is what I do. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 04:44, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Darrinpdaniel (13:19, 14 July 2025)

I was turned down on my page due to not having enough sited references or citations. Can you assist me in changing so I could resubmit --Darrinpdaniel (talk) 13:20, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I see that your username is the same as the article title. Are you the same person? · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 17:04, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I am the same person. Darrinpdaniel (talk) 19:33, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I now realize that is not usually accepted. I can find a way for another person that works on these types of projects or do you know someone within the Wikpedia Unviverse who writes these? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Darrinpdaniel (talk) 20:25, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Try asking at the Wikipedia:Teahouse. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 07:03, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Mirana 48 (20:51, 14 July 2025)

Hello I am at the most basic level of copyediting and can't seem to find info on how to delete a word oe phrase on a page. Would like to build my skills. Please help with this first step. Thank you. --Mirana 48 (talk) 20:51, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Mirana 48, Click on the edit tab to open the editor, select the content to delete, press your delete key, the content should disappear from view. Select edit summary, explain why you are deleting the content, then click on 'publish' and the page will update without the deleted content. If this does not work, I will need to know more details on how you are editing. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 07:00, 15 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator Elections | Discussion phase

Administrator Elections | Discussion phase

The discussion phase of the July 2025 administrator elections is officially open. As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • July 18–22 - Discussion phase (we are here)
  • July 23–29 - SecurePoll voting phase
  • July 30–c. Aug 3 - Scrutineering phase

We are currently in the discussion phase. The candidate subpages are open to questions and comments from everyone, in the same style as a request for adminship. You may discuss the candidates at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/July 2025/Discussion phase.

On July 23, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote totals cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's totals during the election. You must be extended confirmed to vote.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last approximately four days, or perhaps a little longer. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the results page (you may want to watchlist this page) and transcluded to the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose), and must also have received a minimum of 20 support votes. Because this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

Administrator Elections | Voting phase

Administrator Elections | Voting phase

The voting phase of the July 2025 administrator elections has started and continues until July 29 at 23:59 UTC. You can participate in the voting phase at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/July 2025/Voting phase.

As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • July 23–29 – Voting phase
  • July 30–c. Aug 3 – Scrutineering phase

In the voting phase, the candidate subpages will close to public questions and discussion, and everyone who qualifies to vote will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote totals cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's vote total during the election. The suffrage requirements are similar to those at RFA.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for approximately four days, perhaps longer. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the results page (this is a good page to watchlist), and transcluded to the main election page. Question from PrintHallo (11:10, 29 July 2025)

Hello,

I’d appreciate your feedback on how I handled a recent content dispute on the Talk:Hannibal (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk%3AHannibal#Hannibal_is_born_in_Modern_day_Tunisia) page.

A user added a fringe theory—claiming Hannibal was born in Malta—supported by a non-reliable and speculative source. This claim was inserted into the infobox, giving it undue weight alongside the scholarly consensus that he was born in Carthage (modern-day Tunisia).

I explained on the talk page why the theory violates WP:RS and WP:UNDUE and should not be presented without proper context. The user stopped responding after that. I then set a time window for discussion before reverting. Once that passed without further input, I removed the unsupported claim from the article and posted a clear warning in red on the talk page to discourage reinsertion without consensus.

Do you think I approached this situation appropriately? I’d like to ensure I’m handling these disputes in line with Wikipedia’s best practices.

Thanks in advance! --PrintHallo (talk) 11:10, 29 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have no opinions on the sources as I am an engineer, not a historian. I suggest getting a third opinion from someone with more appropriate background, and this does not look like something that needs to go to ANI. Other than that, I don't see any major problems with the talk page discussion. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 13:20, 29 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. That's funny. I've never had someone else fixing the same thing at the same time on Wikipedia. Thanks for adding the foot stand anchor. I learned something new today. That is very helpful. Question from Zongalez (07:18, 6 August 2025)

Hello! I have recently begun my editing journey in areas of interest - armed forces, music, business - within and outside India, and martial arts.

I was updating the fighter records on the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasmine_Parr In the Win Loss Column there is a template used to give the result and a background colour. I attempted to use the Yes2 template, which is already in use in the previous results, but it would never give the result, just a underlying syntax text. When you get the time, please help me understand how to do this. Thank you Z --Zongalez (talk) 07:18, 6 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Worked OK for me. What exactly did you do? What editor were you using? (I used source editor) Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 08:05, 6 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, G15, has been enacted. It applies to pages generated by a large language model (LLM) without human review.
  • Following a request for comment, there is a new policy outlining the granting of permissions to view the IP addresses of temporary accounts. Temporary account deployment on the English Wikipedia is currently scheduled for September 2025, and editors can request access to the permission ahead of time. Admins are encouraged to keep an eye on the request page; there will likely be a flood of editors requesting the permission when they realize they can no longer see IP addresses.
