『ユダス・マカベウス』（Judas Maccabaeus ジューダス・マカビーアス）HWV63は、ゲオルク・フリードリヒ・ヘンデルが作曲したオラトリオ。

概要

このオラトリオは1745年から翌年にかけてのジャコバイトの反乱の鎮圧を反映し、この戦いで活躍したカンバーランド公爵のスコットランドからの帰還を祝うために書かれた^[1]^[2]。1746年から翌年にかけて書かれた軍国主義四部作（『機会オラトリオ』『ユダス・マカベウス』『ヨシュア』『アレクサンダー・バルス』）のひとつである^[3]。

ユダ・マカバイは偶像崇拝を強要する異教徒の圧制からイスラエルを解放した英雄であり、旧約聖書続編の『マカバイ記』に登場する。

初演は1747年 4月1日、ロイヤル・オペラ・ハウス（コヴェント・ガーデン）。『メサイア』に次いで人気の高いオラトリオである。台本はトマス・モーレルによる。

『ユダス・マカベウス』は成功を収めた。また、当時ロンドンに住んでいた5000人ほどのユダヤ人は、このオラトリオを熱狂的に迎えたという^[2]。

ユダヤ的な内容を嫌ったナチス・ドイツでは、話をオラニエ公ウィレム1世によるオランダのスペインからの独立に差し替えた『ナッサウのヴィルヘルム』 (Wilhelmus von Nassauen) として1941年にハンブルクで上演された^[4]。

「見よ勇者は帰る」の旋律

有名な「見よ勇者は帰る」（See the conquering hero comes：第3部、第58曲）は、初演時には存在せず、1750年の再演時に別のオラトリオ『ヨシュア』のために書かれた曲を借用したものである^[1]。この曲の旋律は様々に使われている。

ベートーヴェンは、この旋律を用いてチェロとピアノのための変奏曲を作曲している（WoO 45、1796年）。またスズキ・メソードではヴァイオリン用の練習曲になっている。またこの曲はかつては近代オリンピックの表彰式に流されていた。

また、スイス人作詞家Edmond Louis Budry は、1884年、この旋律に聖句から讃美歌の歌詞「よろこべやたたえよや」を付けた。欧米諸国ではイースターの歌としてもよく歌われる。

イギリスでは愛国歌として扱われ、ヘンリー・ウッドの『イギリスの海の歌によるファンタジア』の中でも使用されている。

もともとこのオラトリオはハヌカの起源になった出来事に関するものであり、ユダヤ教ではレヴィン・キプニス (Levin Kipnis) の作詞による「ハヴァ・ナリマ」（הבה נרימה）というハヌカを祝う歌として歌われる。

日本へは、軍楽隊創設にあたりイギリスから赴任したジョン・ウィリアム・フェントンによって明治期に紹介され、運動会の起源とされる1874年の競闘遊戯で演奏されたほか、1877年の西南戦争において城山の戦い前夜に官軍軍楽隊が薩摩藩士族らに向けて天神山から演奏した曲目の一つと伝えられている。現在でも表彰式等で演奏される「得賞歌」としてよく知られる^[5]^[6]。

あらすじ

モーレルによる台本は第二正典または外典とされる『マカバイ記1』の2-8章にもとづいており、それにフラウィウス・ヨセフス『ユダヤ古代誌』の要素が加えられている。

このオラトリオで描出されるのは紀元前170-160年、ユダヤがセレウコス朝に支配されていた時代の出来事で、セレウコス朝はユダヤ教を根絶しようと試みた。ゼウス崇拝を命令され、迫害の脅しのもとでユダヤ人の多くはその命令に従ったが、あくまで従わないものもあった。反抗者のひとりであるマタティアは、異教のいけにえをささげようとした仲間のユダヤ人を殺害する。マタティアは異教の祭壇を破壊した後、山中に逃げこみ、そこでユダヤ教の信仰のために戦おうとする人々を集める^[7]。

ヘンデルの音楽は、ユダヤ人たちの運命が落胆から歓喜へと変わるのに連れて変化する気分を描きだしている^[7]。

第1部

人々は指導者であるマタティアの死を悼むが、マタティアの子であるシモンは彼らの信仰を復活させようとして、戦いに参加するように告げる (Arm, arm, ye brave)。シモンの兄であるユダ・マカバイは指導者の役割を引き継ぎ、エホバの力による自由と勝利の信念によって人々を奮い立たせる^[7]。

第2部

人々は勝利を得るが、ユダは彼らが慢心して勝利を自分たちの手柄と考えるようになるのではないかと懸念する。セレウコス朝の将軍であるゴルギアスは復讐を計画し、人々の浮いた気分は落胆の嘆きへと変わる (Ah! wretched Israel!)。再びユダが人々を召集し (Sound an alarm)、異教の祭壇は倒されなければならないこと、いつわりの宗教には反抗せねばならないことを主張する^[7]^[8]。

第3部

ついにユダヤ人の勝利が獲得される (See, the Conqu’ring Hero Comes!)。ローマがユダヤ人と同盟してセレウコス朝に対抗しようと考えているという知らせが届く。とうとう祖国に平和がもたらされ、人々は喜ぶ (O lovely peace)^[7]。
