ഹൈന്ദവരുടെ ആരാധനാമൂർത്തിയും ശക്തി സ്വരൂപിണിയായ ഒരു ഭഗവതിയുയാണ് മീനാക്ഷി(മധുര മീനാക്ഷി)(Sanskrit: Mīnākṣī; Tamil: Mīṉāṭci; sometimes spelled as Minakshi; also known as Aṅgayaṟkaṇṇi,^[1]^[2] Mīnāṭci and Taḍādakai),^[3] പരാശക്തിയുടെ അവതാരവും പാർവതി സ്വരൂപവുമാണ് മീനാക്ഷി എന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം. മത്സ്യക്കണ്ണുള്ളവൾ എന്നാണ് പേരിന്റെ അർത്ഥം. തടാതകി എന്നായിരുന്നുവത്രെ ആദ്യത്തെ പേര്. പാണ്ഡ്യ രാജാവായ മാളവ്യധ്വജന്റെ മകളായി പിറന്നു എന്നാണ് ഐതിഹ്യം. മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ സഹോദരിയും ‍പരമശിവന്റെ ഭാര്യയുമാണ്. ദക്ഷിണ ഭാരതം മുഴുവൻ കീഴടക്കി ഹിമാലയത്തിൽ എത്തി മഹാദേവനെ കണ്ടതോടെയാണ് മീനാക്ഷി തന്റെ പാർവതി സ്വരൂപം തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞത്. ഒരു പ്രധാന ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠയായുള്ള ചുരുക്കം ഹൈന്ദവ ദൈവങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് മീനാക്ഷി. മീനാക്ഷി മുഖ്യ പ്രതിഷ്ഠയായ മധുര ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ ഒരു വശത്ത് മീനാക്ഷിയും മറുവശത്ത് ശിവൻ അഥവാ സുന്ദരേശ്വരനുമാണ് പ്രതിഷ്ഠ.
