1947 ਵਿੱਚ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਦੀ ਵੰਡ, ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀ ਵੰਡ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਹਿੱਸਾ, ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਸੂਬੇ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਡੋਮੀਨੀਅਨ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਡੋਮੀਨੀਅਨ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਰੈੱਡਕਲਿਫ ਲਾਈਨ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਵੰਡਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਬੰਗਾਲੀ ਹਿੰਦੂ-ਬਹੁਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਭਾਰਤ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਰਾਜ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ, ਅਤੇ ਬੰਗਾਲੀ ਮੁਸਲਿਮ ਬਹੁ-ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਾਲਾ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਬੰਗਾਲ (ਹੁਣ ਬੰਗਲਾਦੇਸ਼) ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਸੂਬਾ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ।

20 ਜੂਨ 1947 ਨੂੰ, ਬੰਗਾਲ ਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਨੇ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਸੂਬੇ ਦੇ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ਭਾਰਤ ਜਾਂ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਹੋਣ ਜਾਂ ਕ੍ਰਮਵਾਰ ਬੰਗਾਲੀ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਬੰਗਾਲੀ ਹਿੰਦੂਆਂ ਲਈ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਭੂਮੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੰਡਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤੀ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ ਸੈਸ਼ਨ ਵਿੱਚ, ਅਸੈਂਬਲੀ ਨੇ 120-90 ਦੁਆਰਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਜੇਕਰ ਇਹ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੀ ਨਵੀਂ ਸੰਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕਜੁੱਟ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ, ਪੱਛਮੀ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਦੇ ਵਿਧਾਇਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਖਰੀ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਨੇ 58-21 ਦੁਆਰਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਸੂਬੇ ਦੀ ਵੰਡ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀ ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਸੰਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਪੂਰਬੀ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਦੇ ਵਿਧਾਇਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਵੱਖਰੀ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ, 106-35 ਦੁਆਰਾ ਇਹ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਸੂਬੇ ਦੀ ਵੰਡ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਅਤੇ 107-34 ਤੱਕ ਕਿ ਵੰਡ ਦੀ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।^[1]

6 ਜੁਲਾਈ 1947 ਨੂੰ, ਸਿਲਹਟ ਜਨਮਤ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਨੇ ਸਿਲਹਟ ਨੂੰ ਅਸਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖ ਕਰਕੇ ਪੂਰਬੀ ਬੰਗਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਿਲਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ।

ਵੰਡ, 14-15 ਅਗਸਤ 1947 ਨੂੰ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਤਾ ਦੇ ਤਬਾਦਲੇ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ, 3 ਜੂਨ ਦੀ ਯੋਜਨਾ, ਜਾਂ ਮਾਊਂਟਬੈਟਨ ਯੋਜਨਾ ਵਜੋਂ ਜਾਣੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ। ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸੁਤੰਤਰਤਾ, 15 ਅਗਸਤ 1947 ਨੂੰ, ਭਾਰਤੀ ਉਪ ਮਹਾਂਦੀਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਦੇ 150 ਸਾਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਪੂਰਬੀ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ 1971 ਦੇ ਬੰਗਲਾਦੇਸ਼ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਯੁੱਧ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਬੰਗਲਾਦੇਸ਼ ਦਾ ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਦੇਸ਼ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ।
