ਭਾਰਤ ਛੱਡੋ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਅਗਸਤ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਵੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮਹਾਤਮਾ ਗਾਂਧੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਦੂਜੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਯੁੱਧ ਦੌਰਾਨ 9 ਅਗਸਤ 1942 ਨੂੰ ਆਲ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਕਾਂਗਰਸ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਦੇ ਬੰਬਈ ਸੈਸ਼ਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਇੱਕ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਸੀ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਦੇ ਅੰਤ ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ।

ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਸ ਮਿਸ਼ਨ ਨਾਲ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਯੁੱਧ ਦੇ ਯਤਨਾਂ ਲਈ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸਮਰਥਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸਫਲ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਗਾਂਧੀ ਨੇ ਗੋਵਾਲੀਆ ਟੈਂਕ ਮੈਦਾਨ ਵਿੱਚ 9 ਅਗਸਤ 1942 ਨੂੰ ਬੰਬਈ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਛੱਡੋ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਰੋ ਜਾਂ ਮਰੋ ਦਾ ਸੱਦਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਵਾਇਸਰਾਏ ਲਿਨਲਿਥਗੋ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਨੂੰ "1857 ਤੋਂ ਹੁਣ ਤੱਕ ਦੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਬਗਾਵਤ" ਵਜੋਂ ਟਿੱਪਣੀ ਕੀਤੀ।^[5]^[6]

ਆਲ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਕਾਂਗਰਸ ਕਮੇਟੀ ਨੇ ਗਾਂਧੀ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਤੋਂ "ਐਨ ਆਰਡਰਲੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਵਾਢੀ" ਦੀ ਮੰਗ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਵਿਰੋਧ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ। ਭਾਵੇਂ ਇਹ ਜੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੀ, ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਸਨ। ਗਾਂਧੀ ਦੇ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਦੇ ਕੁਝ ਘੰਟਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਹੀ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਕਾਂਗਰਸ ਦੀ ਲਗਭਗ ਸਮੁੱਚੀ ਲੀਡਰਸ਼ਿਪ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਮੁਕੱਦਮੇ ਦੇ ਕੈਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾਤਰ ਨੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਦੀ ਲੜਾਈ ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਤੇ ਜਨਤਾ ਦੇ ਸੰਪਰਕ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਬਿਤਾਈ। ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਇਸਰਾਏ ਕੌਂਸਲ, ਆਲ ਇੰਡੀਆ ਮੁਸਲਿਮ ਲੀਗ, ਹਿੰਦੂ ਮਹਾਸਭਾ, ਰਿਆਸਤਾਂ, ਇੰਡੀਅਨ ਇੰਪੀਰੀਅਲ ਪੁਲਿਸ, ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਇੰਡੀਅਨ ਆਰਮੀ, ਅਤੇ ਇੰਡੀਅਨ ਸਿਵਲ ਸਰਵਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਮਰਥਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਸੀ। ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਕਾਰੋਬਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਭਾਰੀ ਯੁੱਧ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੇ ਖਰਚਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਲਾਭ ਉਠਾਇਆ, ਭਾਰਤ ਛੱਡੋ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਦਾ ਸਮਰਥਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ। ਮੁੱਖ ਬਾਹਰੀ ਸਮਰਥਨ ਅਮਰੀਕੀਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਆਇਆ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰਪਤੀ ਫਰੈਂਕਲਿਨ ਡੀ. ਰੂਜ਼ਵੈਲਟ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਵਿੰਸਟਨ ਚਰਚਿਲ 'ਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਮੰਗਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਣ ਲਈ ਦਬਾਅ ਪਾਇਆ।^[7]

ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ ਹਕੂਮਤ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਦੇਸ਼ ਭਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਈ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਹਿੰਸਕ ਘਟਨਾਵਾਂ ਵਾਪਰੀਆਂ। ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ਾਂ ਨੇ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਨੇਤਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਫਤਾਰ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ 1945 ਤੱਕ ਜੇਲ੍ਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ। ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ, ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਭਾਰਤ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਰਾਜਕ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਯੁੱਧ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਦੇ ਯੁੱਗ ਲਈ ਸਵਾਲ ਇਹ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਸ਼ਾਨਦਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਿਕਲਣਾ ਹੈ।

1945 ਵਿੱਚ ਜੇਲ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੰਦ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਘੁਲਾਟੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਰਿਹਾਈ ਨਾਲ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਹੋਇਆ। ਇਸ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਹੀਦਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁਕੁੰਦ ਕਾਕਤੀ, ਮਾਤੰਗਿਨੀ ਹਾਜ਼ਰਾ, ਕਨਕਲਤਾ ਬਰੂਆ, ਕੁਸ਼ਲ ਕੋਂਵਰ, ਭੋਗੇਸ਼ਵਰੀ ਫੁਕਨਾਨੀ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹਨ।^[8] 1992 ਵਿੱਚ, ਭਾਰਤੀ ਰਿਜ਼ਰਵ ਬੈਂਕ ਨੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਛੱਡੋ ਅੰਦੋਲਨ ਦੀ ਗੋਲਡਨ ਜੁਬਲੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਨਾਉਣ ਲਈ 1 ਰੁਪਏ ਦਾ ਯਾਦਗਾਰੀ ਸਿੱਕਾ ਜਾਰੀ ਕੀਤਾ।^[9]

ਉਸ (ਮਹਾਤਮਾ ਗਾਂਧੀ) ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਰ ਹੋਣ ਲਈ ਇਕ ਘੰਟਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਸੰਸਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਦਾ ਸਲੋਕ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਮੁਸਲਿਮ ਕੁੜੀ ਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਾਨ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਥੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਸੁਨੇਹਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ। ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਭਗਵਦ ਗੀਤਾ (ਪਵਿੱਤਰ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ), ਕੁਰਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਰਦੂ ਦੇ ਕਾਇਦੇ ਸਨ, ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਫੁੱਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਾਰ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਮਿਸ਼ਨਰ ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਕਟੋਰੀਆ ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ (ਥਾਣੇ) ਲੈ ਜਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ.. 9 ਅਗਸਤ 1942 ਨੂੰ ਟਾਈਮ ਦੀ ਰਿਪੋਰਟਰ ਲਿਲੀ ਰੋਥਮੈਨ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ
