ਰਜਤ ਕਪੂਰ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਦਿੱਲੀ, ਭਾਰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੋਇਆ। ^[2] 1983 ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਥੀਏਟਰ ਗਰੁੱਪ ਚਿੰਗਾਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜ ਗਿਆ। 1985 ਵਿੱਚ ਉਹ ਫਿਲਮ ਅਤੇ ਟੈਲੀਵਿਜ਼ਨ ਇੰਸਟੀਚਿਊਟ ਆਫ ਇੰਡੀਆ (FTII) ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋਣ ਲਈ ਪੁਣੇ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ। ^[1]

ਕਪੂਰ ਨੇ ਪੈਰਲਲ ਸਿਨੇਮਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਕੀਤੀ। 1989 ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਸ਼ਾਹਾਨੀ ਫਿਲਮ ਖਿਆਲ ਗਾਥਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਕੀਤੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ 1990 ਦੇ ਦਹਾਕੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਦਾਕਾਰੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਨੌਕਰੀਆਂ ਲੱਭਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁਸ਼ਕਲ ਆਈ ਤਾਂ ਕਪੂਰ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਾਰਟਸ ਲਿਖਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉਸਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਈਵੇਟ ਡਿਟੈਕਟਿਵ: ਟੂ ਪਲੱਸ ਟੂ ਪਲੱਸ ਵਨ (1997) ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਰਫਾਨ ਖਾਨ ਅਤੇ ਨਸੀਰੂਦੀਨ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਮਾਮੂਲੀ ਭੂਮਿਕਾਵਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਨ, ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੀ ਪੂਰੀ-ਲੰਬਾਈ ਦੇ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ਨ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਕੀਤੀ। ^[1]
