ਸੰਨ 1914 ਨੂੰ ਸੇਰਾਜੇਵੋ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੇਵਰੀਲੋ ਪਰਿਨਸਿਪ (Gavrilo Princip) (ਇੱਕ ਸਰਬਿਆ ਨੈਸ਼ਨਲਿਸਟ ਗਰੁਪ ਦਾ ਆਦਮੀ) ਨੇ ਆਸਟ੍ਰੀਆ-ਹੰਗਰੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਜਕੁਮਾਰ ਆਰਚਡੂਕ ਫਰੈਂਜ਼ ਫਰਡੀਨੈਂਡ (Archduke Franz Ferdinand) ਦਾ ਕਤਲ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ।^[5] ਇਸ ਲਈ ਆਸਟਰੀਆ ਅਤੇ ਹੰਗਰੀ ਦੇ ਮੰਤਰੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਜਰਨੈਲਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਸਟਰੀਆ ਅਤੇ ਹੰਗਰੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਰਬੀਆ ਉੱਤੇ ਹਮਲਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ। ਯੂਰਪ ਦੇ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਦੁਜੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਟਰੀ ਮਦਦ ਦੇ ਵਾਅਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਣ ਕਾਰਨ (ਕਿ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਦੇਸ਼ ਹਮਲਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਸਮਝੋਤੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਇੱਕ ਦੂਜਾ ਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਕਰਨਗੇ), ਇਸ ਘਟਨਾ ਕਾਰਣ ਪੂਰਾ ਯੂਰਪ ਜਲਦੀ ਹੀ ਲੜਾਈ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੁੱਦ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਯੁੱਧ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ। ਯੂਰਪ ਦੇ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਹੋਰ ਮਹਾਂਦੀਪਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੈਲੇ ਹੋਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਇਹ ਪੂਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੈਲ ਗਿਆ।

ਯੁੱਧ ਦੇ ਖਤਮ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਜਰਮਨੀ, ਰੂਸ, ਆਸਟ੍ਰੀਆ-ਹੰਗਰੀ, ਅਤੇ ਆਟੋਮਨ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਹਾਲਤ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਾੜੀ ਹੋ ਗਈ। ਆਸਟ੍ਰੀਆ-ਹੰਗਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਆਟੋਮਨ ਦੋੋੋੋਵਾਂ ਰਾਜਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਛੋਟੇ-ਛੋਟੇ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੰਡ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਦੇਸ਼ ਯੁੱਧ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੋ ਗਏ। ਰੂਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੂਸ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਖਤਮ ਹੋ ਗਈ, ਅਤੇ ਸੋਵੀਅਤ ਯੂਨੀਅਨ ਬਣ ਗਈ। ਯੂਰਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਈ ਨਵੇਂ ਦੇਸ਼ ਬਣੇ ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਪੁਰਣੇ ਖਤਮ ਹੋ ਗਏ।

ਕਾਰਨ

ਪਹਿਲੀ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਜੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਏ ਦੇਸ਼, ਹਰੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਐਲਾਏਜ਼, ਕੇਸਰੀ ਰੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੈਂਟਰਲ ਪਾਵਰਜ਼, ਅਤੇ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਲੜਾਈ ਚੋ ਬਾਹਰ ਰਹੇ, ਉਹ ਸਲੇਟੀ ਰੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ।

19ਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ, ਯੂਰਪਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਨੇ ਯੂਰਪ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ-ਸੰਤੁਲਨ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ, ਬਹੁਤ ਉਪਰਾਲੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਸਨ, ਜਿਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਪੁਰੇ ਯੂਰਪ ਮਹਾਂਦੀਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਉਲਝਵਾਂ ਸਿਆਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਫ਼ੌਜੀ ਗੱਠਜੋੜ ਬਣ ਗਏ ਸਨ ।^[2] ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਗੱਠਜੋੜ 1819 ਵਿੱਚ ਜਰਮਨ ਰਾਜਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਅਤੇ ਆਸਟਰੀਆ-ਹੰਗਰੀ ਦੇ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਹੋਇਆ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਡੂਲ ਅਲਾਇਅੰਸ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਟੋਮਨ ਰਾਜਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਘਟਣ ਸਮੇਂ, ਆਟੋਮਨ ਦੇ ਬਾਲਕਨ ਹਿਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੂਸ ਦੇ ਵਧਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਪਟਨ ਲਈ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ ।^[2] ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਟਲੀ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਜਰਮਨ ਅਤੇ ਆਸਟਰੀਆ-ਹੰਗਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਮਝੌਤਾ ਕੀਤਾ, ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਟਰੀਪਲ ਅਲਾਇੰਸ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਣ ਲੱਗਾ ।^[6] ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿੱਚ 1892 ਨੂੰ ਫਰਾਂਸ ਅਤੇ ਰੂਸ ਨੇ ਟਰੀਪਲ ਅਲਾਇੰਸ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੁਧ ਫਰਾਂਕੋ-ਰੂਸੀ ਗਠਜੋੜ ਬਣਾਇਆ, ਅਤੇ ਫਿਰ 1907 ਵਿੱਚ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਰਾਜਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਵੀ ਫਰਾਂਸ ਅਤੇ ਰੂਸ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜ ਗਈ, ਅਤੇ ਟਰੀਪਲ ਏਨਟਟੇ ਬਣਾਇਆ ।^[2]

ਜਰਮਨੀ ਦੀ ਉਦਯੋਗਕ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਵੱਧਣ ਬਾਅਦ, ਕੈਜ਼ਰ ਵਿਲਹੇਲਮ 2 (Kaiser Wilhelm II) ਨੇ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿ ਦੀ ਰੋਇਲ ਨੇਵੀ ਦਾ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਜਰਮਨ ਨੇਵੀ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਕੈਜ਼ਰਲਿਚ ਮੇਰੀਨ (Kaiserliche Marine) ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ, ਬਣਾੳੁਣੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਿਤੀ ।^[7] ਇਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਦੋਨੋ ਬ੍ਰਿਟੇਨ ਅਤੇ ਜਰਮਨੀ ਇੱਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਤੋ ਵਧੀਆ ਨੇਵੀ ਅਤੇ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੁਟ ਗਏ ।^[7] ਬਰਿਟਨ ਅਤੇ ਜਰਮਨੀ ਦੀ ਇਹ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਦੌੜ, ਹੋਲੀ-ਹੋਲੀ ਯੂਰਪ ਦੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੈਲ ਗਈ, ਅਤੇ ਯੂਰੋਪ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਆਪਣੀ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਧਨ-ਸੰਪਤੀ ਲੜਾਈਆਂ ਲਈ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਾਉਣ ਲੱਗੇ ।^[8] 1908 ਅਤੇ 1913 ਦੇ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ, ਯੂਰਪ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਟਰੀ ਦੇ ਉਤੇ ਖਰਚਾ 50% ਵੱਧ ਗਿਆ ।^[9]

ਸੰਨ 1909 ਵਿੱਚ ਆਸਟਰੀਆ-ਹੰਗਰੀ ਨੇ ਆਟੋਮਨ ਰਾਜਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਦੇ ਬੋਸਨੀਆ-ਹਰਜ਼ਗੋਵੀਨਾ ਦੇ ਹਿਸੇ ਤੇ ਕਬਜ਼ਾ ਕਰ ਲਿਆ, ਇਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਰੂਸ ਅਤੇ ਸਰਬੀਆ ਦਾ ਰਾਜ ਨਾਰਾਜ ਹੋ ਗਏ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਸ ਹਿਸੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਲਾਵਿਕ ਸਰਬੀਅਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਰੂਸ ਅਤੇ ਸਰਬੀਆ ਆਪਣਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਸਨ ।^[10] ਸੰਨ 1913 ਨੂੰ ਬਾਲਕਨ ਲੀਗ ਅਤੇ ਆਟੋਮਨ ਰਾਜਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਦੇ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਬਾਲਕਨ ਲੜਾਈ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਹੋ ਗਈ । ਇਸ ਲੜਾਈ ਬਾਅਦ ਹੋਏ ਸਮਝੋਤੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਟੋਮਨ ਦੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਟ ਕੇ ਅਲਬੇਨੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਦੇਸ਼ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਆਟੋਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਕੱਟ ਕੇ ਬਲਗਾਰੀਆ, ਸਰਬੀਆ ਅਤੇ ਗਰੀਸ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਵੱਡਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ । ਫਿਰ 16 ਜੂਨ 1913 ਨੂੰ ਬਲਗੇਰੀਆ ਨੇ ਸਰਬੀਆ ਅਤੇ ਗਰੀਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਹਮਲਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਅਤੇ ਦੂਜੀ ਬਾਲਕਨ ਲੜਾਈ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ, ਜੋ 33 ਦਿਨ ਚੱਲੀ । ਲੜਾਈ ਦੇ ਬਾਅਦ ਬਲਗੇਰੀਆ ਦਾ ਮੇਸਾਡੋਨੀਆ ਦਾ ਹਿਸਾ ਸਰਬੀਆ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ, ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਕਾਰਨ ਇਸ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਰ ਅਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਫੈਲ ਗਈ ।^[11]

28 ਜੂਨ 1914 ਨੂੰ ਸੇਰਾਜੇਵੋ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੇਵਰੀਲੋ ਪਰਿਨਸਿਪ (Gavrilo Princip), ਜੋ ਬੋਸਨੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਸਰਬ ਸੀ, ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਯੰਗ ਬਾਸਨੀਆ (Young Basnia) ਦੇ ਗਰੁਪ ਦਾ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਸੀ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਸਟਰੀਆ-ਹੰਗਰੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਜਕੁਮਾਰ ਆਰਚਡੂਕ ਫਰੈਂਜ਼ ਫਰਡੀਨੈਂਡ ਦਾ ਕਤਲ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ।^[12] ਆਸਟਰੀਆ-ਹੰਗਰੀ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਰਬੀਆ ਦਾ ਹੱਥ ਸਮਝਿਆ,^[12] ਅਤੇ ਆਸਟਰੀਆ-ਹੰਗਰੀ ਨੇ ਸਰਬੀਆ ਤੇ ਕੁਝ ਮੰਗਾਂ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਜੁਲਾਈ ਆਲਟੀਮੈਟਮ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।^[13] ਜਦ ਸਰਬੀਆ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਮੰਗਾਂ ਨਾਂ ਮੱਨੀਆਂ, ਤਾਂ ਆਸਟਰੀਆ-ਹੰਗਰੀ ਨੇ 28 ਜੁਲਾਈ 1914 ਨੂੰ ਸਰਬੀਆ ਉਤੇ ਲੜਾਈ ਦੀ ਘੋਸ਼ਣਾ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ । ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਬਾਅਦ ਰੂਸ ਦੀ ਰਾਜਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਲੜਾਈ ਦੀ ਘੋਸ਼ਣਾ ਕਿਤੀ, ਰੂਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਉਦਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਆਸਟਰੀਆ-ਹੰਗਰੀ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਬਾਲਕਨ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਖਤਮ ਕਰੇ।^[6] ਜਦੋਂ ਜਰਮਨੀ ਵੀ 30 ਜੁਲਾਈ 1914 ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਜੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ ਗਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਫਰਾਂਸ ਵੀ ਜੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ ਗਿਆ । ਫਰਾਂਸ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਆਇਆ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਜਰਮਨੀ ਤੋਂ ਫਰੇਂਕੋ-ਪਰਸ਼ੀਆਨ ਜੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਾਰ ਦਾ ਬਦਲਾ ਚਾਉਂਦਾ ਸੀ।^[14]

ਸਰਬੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੌਜੀ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ
